COMMANDER. 0. S. N. Lieut. R. A. Phillips, who was on duty in Hiwaii on the morning of I', earl Harbor, lias been promot ed to Lieut.-Commander and ii now on one of the battleships in tihe Pacific area. Commander Phil lips was graduated from Annapolis in 1935. He married Miss Sarah Frost Sloan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Sloan and granddaugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hill of Horse Gove Valley. Mrs. Phil lips and their young daughter. Sally Lee, are expected soon from San Francisco to spend some time here with her parents and grand parents. DR. GEORGE GALLJUP VISITOR IN HIGHLANDS Dr. Georg/e Gallup of Prinston University, of Gallup Poll Came, was a guest at. King's Inn the past week. Witih him was his friend, Wilton E. Hall, of Ander son, S. C, Editor and owner of Anderson's two leading newspapers, The Independent and The Daily Mail. Dr. Gallup is interested in buying a home in some quiet moun tain resort and appeard very much impressed wifh the beauties of Highlands. Invited to meet Dr. Gallup and Editor Hall at a special luncheon, were S. C. Russell .Highlands chamber of commerce president, and Mayor Wilton H. Cobb. Methodist Schedule Is Announced George W. Dalton of Lewisville. a student at the Duke School of Divinity, will assist Rev. J. S. Higgins in thje various churches n his charge during the summer. Mr. Higgins lias announced that services will be held at the Metho dist church here each ? Sunday morning at eleven o'clock through the summer, and at hat he and Mr. Dalton will alternate between the Highlands church and the Cashiers church. Mr. Higgins and Mr. Dalton have just completed a ten-day vacation Bible school at the Cashiers Metho dist church and on Wednesday of this week began another school with Mr. R. H. Hull at the Horse Gove church. This school will con tinue through next week with preaching services each night by Mr. Higgins. The Highlands community Bible school is* scheduled to begin June 21st at the Baptist church, with the Rev. J. S. Higgins as princi pal. SERVICES FOR NEGROES ARRANGED FOR SUMMER Following the usual summer cus tom, church services for negroes who are here with their employers, will begin Sunday afternoon at 4:30 at the Presbyterian church with the pastor. Rev. H. T. Bridg man, in charge. On the second Sunday afternoon the services will be held at the Methodist church and on the third Sunday at the Baptist church. The respective pas tors, or someone appointed by tlvem, will be in charge each Sun day afternoon, and the services are to continue through the sea son. Hotels Look For Good Season Highlands' two year-round hotels have enjoyed an unusually Rood spring business and this weekend will see the reopening of *11 sum mer hotels. This, together with lite fact that a number of summer home-owners are already here, and that inquiries are ooming in daily through Che chamber of commerce, leads many to believe that a good season is in store for Highlands again this year. Mrs. O. E. Young entertained "ith a bridge luncheon Wednewby nt her home on the Watt) alia road as a courtesy to the card club. Peonies and lemon lilies decorated the home. Mrs. C C. Potts won high score prite, Mrs. W. H. Obb the second high, and low award went to Mr*. Frank B. Ooek. Cobb & Potts Candidates For Mayor; Other Candidates Wiltoo H. Cobb, Mayor of High lands for the past two years, is a candidate for re-election on June 22nd. Opiposing Mr. Cobb in the race for mayor is J. E. Potts. Members of thjf present board of commissioners filing for re-elec tion are S. C. Creswell, E. H. Brown, Norman Reese and I>ewey Hopper. Hew candidates for the board are W. H. Rogers, Harry Holt, T. C. Harbison, T. N. Hall, C E. Mitchell and H. S .Talley. Mr. Talley is a former member of the board, having served from 1937 through 1939. 1- W. Randa 'of Atlanta art occupying the Trice cottage on East Main street for a few weeks. Friends of Mrs. A. J. Salinas will be pleased to learn that she is improving from a recent illness at her home in Augusta, and hope that sh* plans to spend at least a part of tihe season at "Kalallan ta", her lovely summer home here. Miss Bess Hines returned home Sunday after a several months' stay in Orlando, Fla. Prof, and Mrs. B. E. Fernow of Clemson College are at their sum mer place, "Fernwood" on Stew wart's Pond, for the season sub ject to Prof. Eernow's recall to fhe college for war work. O. A. Kesohke of Asheville was the weekend guest of Mrs. O. E. Young. Mrs. Reschke plans to re turn later to spend some time at her cottage on Flat Mounain. Lieut. James Peirfand of Fort Jackson, S. Nollman of Sebring, Fla., and their daugh ter, Miss Catherine NoHman, who was graduated from Brenau Col lege, Gainesville, Ga., this year, are spending the summer at their place on Chestnut street. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. GuentneV and daughter, Miss Antoinette Guent ner, of Lake Worth, Fla., arrived Friday and have opened their sum mer home on Whiteside Mountain for the season. Mr. and Mrs. A. Burrichter and family of Homestead, Fla., have leased the Jack M. Hati cottage on Fifth street for the season and began occupancy Saturday.
