Spread Of Lord's Acre
Plan Told In Coronet
Dramatic Story Of How
Churches Are Aided
Is Related
Today, 13 years after the in
ception of the Lord's Acre plan,
more than 1,000 rural and vil
lage churches in more than half
the states of the Union are cul
tivating an estimated 10,000
acres of ground in the name of
the Lord, according to an arti
cle The Lord is Their Partner,"
appearing in the January issue
of Coronet magazine.
The story was written by Kin
McNeil, former resident of Bre
vard. who is now connected with
the Associated Press In Char
lotte. While in Brevard, Mr. Mc
Neil was editor of the Transyl
vanian Times and correspondent
for The Citizen and The Ashe
ville Times.
Aids Church Budget
The article points out that be
cause of their participation in
the plan, these small churches
find that they are able to pull
themselves financially from the
red to the black side of the
ledger, are burning their mort
gages, paying their pastors re
spectable salaries, and embark
ing fearlessly on new building
projects. Some even boast of a
surplus which they have proud
ly invested in war bonds for
their country.
The movement got its start in
the early spring of 1930 when
rural churches were being hit
hard by the depression. Most of
them, with rapidly decreasing
memberships, underpaid pastors,
and delapidated buildings. Then
James G. K. McClure, of Ashe
ville, a former minister, and the
Rev. Dr. Dumont Clarke of
Asheville, put their heads toge
ther and evolved the Lord's
Acre plan.
Mr. Clark spent the spring
climbing the hillsides of West
ern North Carolina, presenting
the idea personally to scores of
mountain churches, regardless of
denomination. He pointed out
that while the members were
short on cash, they were also
long on land? land that might
be cultivated not only in the
name of the Lord, but for the
Lord, the proceeds to go to the
church budget, according to Co
rnnpf
Movement Spreads
Although slow to root, the
Movement once started spread
rapidly. Under a flexible plan of
procedure, the Lord's Acre pro
ject takes on many different
forms. In North Carolina a 10
jeur-old boy tended a raspberry
patch for three years to contrib
ute a total of $68 to his church,
Women, also in this state, set
:.side the eggs their hens laid
on Sunday and at the end of
the year had $100 to contribute.
Not long after its introduction
here, the plan spread abroad
where it wasgenerally adopted
in Siam. in parts of China, Ko
rea, India, and Mexico. There,
as here, the projects vary wide
ly?from the Siamese doctor
who dedicated all the money he
received from piercing ears for
eui rings, to church-inspired
peach orchards and livestock
faims in China.
A certain Chinese Christian
best summed up the plan, says
Coronet in conclusion, when he
stated. after hearing the ex
planation of the program: "Me
see, all right? a way to grow
church money."
