LADIES' NIGHT
AND ROTARIAN DINNER
Highlands Inn was the scene
of a "ladles' night," Thursday,
when Highlands Rotarians en
tertained the Franklin club and
visiting Rotarians with a din
ner meeting. S. C Russell presi
ded at the meeting and acted
as master of ceremonies Prom
inent speakers on the program
were B. O. Tennant of Ashe
ville, 190th District Governor;
Ralph Cain, superintendent of
D.A.R. School at Tomassis, S. C.,
and past president of the Wal
halla Rotary club, and Nat C.
Wilson, of the Atlanta Rotary
club, regional director of the
Southeastern division of the
American Red Cross. H. W.
Cabe of Franklin made a few
remarks on the progress of the
Fifth War Loan Drive.
Mrs. Graham W. King, concert
singer of Delray Beach, Fla., fa
vored the assembly with three
vocal solos, assisted by Mrs. O.
F. Summer at the piano.
Guy L. Houk presented W. C.
Ball, retiring president of the
ThomasvlUe, Ga., club, with a
fancy gift in behalf of the
Franklin club, and, by request
of the club, a package of "wild
oats" was presented to Frank
B. Cook.
Seventy-five persons enjoyed
the occasion.

WELL-KNOWN PRODUCER
VISITS HIGHLANDS
Among the distinguished visi
tors in Highlands this summer
are Mr. and Mrs. Laurence
Schwab of New York and Miami
who are guests at Highlands
Manor. Mr. Schwab is one of
New York's well-known produ
cers, with "Desert Song," "Good
News," and various other Broad
way musicals to his credit. He
is now writing a series of arti
cles for the Saturday Evening
Post. Mr. Schwab has Just re
turned from St. Louis, Mo.,
where he was consultant direc
tor for the St. Louis Opera. This
is the same Institution where
Watson Barratt is art director
and production manager.
Mr. Barratt's wife, the for
mer Miss Louise Bascom, editor
of the New York Visitor, and
her friend, Miss Helen Augur,
of New York, have been spend
ing several days here at Mrs.
Barratt's summer home on Sat
ulah Mountain.
DAVIS HOME LEASED

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Reno and
their daughter, Miss Betty Joyce
Reno, of Detroit, Mich., have
leased the W. S. Davis house on
the corner of First and West
Main streets for the season, and
are very much charmed with

returned to sea duty after a
short furlough spent here with
his mother, Mrs. Qeorge Saussy,
Sr., at Hlghfleld, their summer
hoipe on the Walhalla Road.
Mrs. W. D. Beacham and her
daughter, Miss Martha Beach
am of Decatur, Ga., arrived last
weelc. and have opened their
summer cottage in the Bhortoff
section for the season.
The monthly supper of the
Episcopal Church of the Incar
nation was held last week at
the hohe of the Misses Char
lotte B. and Esther Elliott. The
supper was served picnic fashion
on the spacious lawn, where
the guests enjoyed the magni
ficent sunset.
Miss Beatrice Beddoe of Ft.
Lauderdale-by-the-sea, Florida,
Is spending some time here vis
iting Mrs. D. E. Linardy at her
home in Horse Cove Valley.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hodgson,
their daughter, Miss Mary Hodg-1
son, and Mrs. Hodgson's mother,
Mrs. James L. Logan, of Atlan
ta, have opened their summer
home on Cullasaja Drive for the
season, and have as their guests
Lt. E. C. Snyder of Charleston,
S. C.
Mrs. J. M. Morrow of Auburn
dale, Fla., is this week opening
her home on the slopes of Sat
ulah Mountain, which she and
Mr. Morrow purchased 1 last sea
son from Mrs. O. E. Young. Mr.
Morrow is expected to arrive
next week.
Mrs. Louis A. Edwards ^ind
son, Louis, have recently re
turned to Highlands to make
theiT home while Captain Ed
wards is on overseas duty. Mrs.
Edwards has as her guest an
aunt who will entertain a num
ber of houseparties of South
Georgia friends during the sum
mer.
Friends of Miss Rebecca Nail
will be Interested to know that
she is convalescing from an ap
pendectomy at Angel hospital
in Franklin.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wldman
and their two sons have re
turned from Shaker Heights,
Ohio, and are at the Hoke cot
tage at the Country Club.
Ensign Antonina K. McCully
has returned to the National
Naval Medical Cetftr, Bethesda,
Md., following a short visit here
with her father, Vice-Admiral
N. A. McCully, who Is spending
the summer at the Appley cot
tage at Hemlock Lawn.
