NEWS ? PEOPLE MISS DORTHA L. MrCOY | WEDS RAYMOND A. CONNER Miss Dortha Lavenia McCoy, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Willie McCoy, of Cullasaja, became the bride of Raymond C. Conner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Conner, of Gay, at a ceremony | solemnized July 27 at Clayton, Oa. The bride wore a white | satin dress with black accessor ies, black and white ear rings, and a crownless white hat with black veil. The couple will make their home fn Detroit, Mich., where Mr. Conner is employed. BUSINESS GIRL'S CIRCLE HOLDS ANNUAL PICNIC The Business Girls' circle of the F r a.n k 1 i n Presbyterian church held its annual picnic at Arrowood Glade Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock, with ap proximately 30 attending, in cluding husbands of the mem bers as invited guests. The committee in charge in cluded Mrs. Mac Whitaker, Mrs. J. Ward Long. Mrs. Frank Jus tice, Mrs. Sam Alexander, and Mrs. Claude H Bolton. The circle will hold its next meeting 'September 15, at the home of Mrs Sam Alexander. | Each month thereafter, It will meet on the first Monday in each month. PANNELL WEDS SYLVA GIRL AT CHAPEL HILL Miss Joyce Cabe, daughter of ttie late Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Cabe, of Sylva, and the niece of Mrs D. H. Clark, of Gay, be came the bride of Rufus Pan nell, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Pannell, of Franklin, July 22 in the Presbyterian church at Chapel Hill. The ceremony was held at 5:30 p. m., with the Rev. J. Robert Nelson, assistant pastor of the Chapel Hill Methodist church performing the cere mony in a setting of white glad ioli and white asters, entwined with ivy. Two seven-branched candelabra with white tapers were used in the center of the altar. Music for the wedding was furnished by David Brandt, organist, of Spencer, and John Von Cannon, of Concord, soloist. Mr. Von Cannon sang "Because", by d'Hardelot. "The Lord's Pray er", by Malotte, was presented at a benediction. Her hat, uhich was white with an illu sion veil was made with a halo effect, with blue flowers on the side. A corsage of gardenias was at tached to her white Bible. Miss Dixie Mull, of Morgan ton, was the maid of honor and only attendant. Ben Lilley, of Jamestown, served as best man. Ushers were Harry H. Strauss and Bill Liv ington, of Asheville. The bride received her edu cation at Webster high school and Pfeiffer college, in Misen heimer. She is a graduate from the University of North Caro lina, having received her Bach elor of Arts degree in June of this year. She now holds a po sition with Bell high school near Chapel Hill. The bridegroom was graduat ed from Franklin high school and Brevard junior college. He is now a senior at the Univer sity of North Carolina. Personal Mention Miss Marjorie Barnard, of Seattle, Wash., is visiting her auni and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Dowdle, in Franklin. Miss Barnard is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Barnard, of Seattle, Wash., well known in Franklin. Mrs. Grant L. Zickgraf and two children, ? Bill and Jane, have returned from Pawley's Is land, near Georgetown, S. C., where they spent two weeks. Mr Zickgraf joined his family on the week-end. Mrs. Bob S. Sloan and Miss Jane Setser spent several days in Durham this week. A. L. Teachy, state supervisor of Veteran's farm training, and T. H. Stafford, district supervis or of vocational agriculture, spent several days in Franklin this week, checking the veter ans farm program. George Roane of Prentiss, has recovered from a case of blood poisoning after undergoing treatment in the Angel clinic for several days. James Andrew Hall, young son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hall, of Leatherman, fractured his el bow in a fall from a tree last week. He was taken to the Angel clinic for treatment. D. A. "Red" Stewart is a pa tient at a hospital in Winston Salem. The Rev. and Mrs. W. B. Und erwood and daughter, Dorothy, are visiting friends in Franklin. Mr. Underwood is a former past or of the Franklin Baptist church. The Rev. and Mrs. C. E. Park er and children left Tuesday for a visit with friends and rela tives in eastern North Carolina and Washington, D. C. Mr. and Mrs. George C. John son, of Eaton, Colo., who have been visiting Mr. Johnson's sis ter, Mrs. J. B. Penland, of Franklin, Route 1, have return ed to their home. Their nephew, Wayne Penland, accompanied them on the return trip to Eat on. Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Moffitt and family, of Longview, Wash., re cently visited their uncle, Mr. J. B. Penland, of Franklin, Route Siler Slagle is able to be out again. Mr. Slagle recently was discharged from Angel hospital, following months of treatment for injuries suffered in a trac tor accident. Mrs. William Davenport and young son, of Raleigh, are here for a visit with Mrs. Daven port's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Moore, and other relatives. The Rev. W. Jackson Huney cutt, pastor of the Franklin Methodist church, left Monday for Emory University, where he will attend a school for urban ministers. Mr. Huneycutt plans to attend the entire two and a half weeks of the school, but will return to Franklin week ends to fill his appointments. Mrs. Geo. A. Jones left Mon day for several days' visit with her daughter, Miss Laura M. Jones, at Lake Junaluska. Dr. and Mrs. J. D. James Edward Callo way, son of Mrs. Tim Calloway, of Franklin, is now stationed at MacDill Field, Fla., following completion of a course at a ra dio school in Illinois. He and his family recently stopped over here for a brief visit with his mother enroute to Florida. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Wooten. Jr., left last Friday for their home in Brandenton, Fla., after a three weeks' visit with Mrs. Wooten's mother, Mrs. Tim Calloway, at her home on Bonny Crest. Miss Helen Freas, of Rich mond, Va., is visiting her moth er, Mrs. H. E. Freas. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Freas and two sons, of Walnut Cove, have been here visiting Mr. Freas' mother, Mrs. H. E. Freas. 'Huckleberry Finn' To Be Presented At Sylva Friday The Immortal story of Mark Twain's boyhood character, "Huckleberry Finn", will be the final presentation of the "The atre In The Sky" at 8:30 o'clock Friday evening at the elemen tary school auditorium in Sylva The play is under the direction of Maurice Geoffrey, and is sponsored by the Jackson coun ty chamber of commerce. McPherson, of Franklin, who is now stationed with the fifth air force at Fukuoka, Japan, recently com pleted the prescribed course of Instruction In Radio repairing at the Kanoya army air base communication school, according to an army announcement re ceived here.
