INC. 400 Human Guinea Pigs Wfear Garments To Test '1 Them For The Consumer By BILL SHARPE Four hundred lucky men and | women scattered all over the , Americas today are deciding , what sort of fabric you will be , wearing in the near future, t They are "wear-testers", anony- , mous but willing guinea pigs, { who put new clothes to prac- | tical use to decide how they will i stand up after they have left ] the factory. I One of the textile industry's . most unusual developments started some years .ago, when ( Burlington Mills gave their i Greensboro employes hose, slips, ] suits and other items to wear i and to report on their quality. ( But during the war the testing di vision, headed by Mrs. Grace I Draper, discovered that there ' was a lot of turn-over in test ers. Many of th^girl employes < struck up romances with sol diers in nearby encampments, and Mrs. Draper was saddened to see her newly married help ers leaving in droves, weighted ? down by suitcases full of wear testing clothes. Then it was decided to use former employes as testers. It I was a good idea, too, because ] the clothes were subjected to : every kind of weather from i Canada to the tropics. Now, reg- ' ularly, new material is shipped | ' out to these testers, and reg- 1 ularly they send back the worn ' garments, together with obser vations about their wearability. 1 Mrs. Draper still uses mill 1 employes in wear-testing, but she says non-employes are bet ter, since they are not so shy about making adverse com- : ments. 1 The division works like this. 1 The garments are sent out to gether with complete instruc tions for washing and cleaning, 1 how many times a garment 1 should be worn, and other per tinent information. Some tests 1 cover a few weeks; others run 1 over a year. Questions to be answered in- < elude: Do the trousers bag at 1 the knees? Do the pants stretch at the seat? Does the material * wrinkle easily in dry weather? i Do the wrinkles fall out over- ' night, Can dirt spots be re- ' moved with cleaner? ' These are straight questions, and the wear-testers send back ' some very straight answers. One 1 wrote that he found his slacks 1 generating so much static elec- ! trlcity in cold weather that his , wife was using him to keep the lights on. One tester indignant- ( ly wrote that she had worn the brand new hose to a party, and during the evening they de- 5 veloped more pops in them than ( a wad of bubble gum. When the garments have been { REAL ESTATE WANTED t WE ARE selling property. One of the Jobs cf the shemists and engineers is to :heck the results of the human testers to establish quality stan iards. They . handle , almost 2, XX) samples a month, and to the tests given the material by luman wear, are added ex laustlve mechanical stretching, teaching, abrasion, cleaning, wd tension tests. The testing division is happy i bout having the scientists use ;heir machines on the products. But they love the wear-testers' reports. After all, machines lon't buy clothes. Elxplains Functions Of Social Security Office By D. W. LAMBERT Manager Usheville S.ocial Security Office This column will present the intimate story of Old-Age and Survivors Insurance. Its pur pose is two-fold. First, inform you of the Social Security Ad ministration program that n*n vides benefits to aged insured workers and their families when the worker retires and to sur viving members of families when the breadwinner dies. Sec ond, to inform you of your rights under this insurance, so that you can reao the full bene fits it has to offer. The field office which serves your county is located in the Flatiron building, Ashevllle. It has three outstanding functions. They are: 1. The handling of all types of benefit claims. This may be paid to be the most important function, since no benefit .may be paid until the qualified per son files his or her application. 2. Issuance of new and dupli :ate social security account lumber cards. 3. Assistance to wage and sal iry workers In commerce and industry in checking their social security wage records to make sure that the records kept for sach worker are accurate.
