FREE FITTING
Fitting is the biggest problem
in dressmaking for most women,
clothing specialists tell us. Only
if it fits will a homemade dress
pay full returns on the money
spent for materials and the
time and effort of making.
For the many women who
will be starting their spring
sewing soon and need to know
how to get a good fit as well as
how to cut and construct a
dress, homemakers may wish to
write for two bulletins ? "Pat
tern Alteration" (F.B. 1968) and
"Making a Dress at Home" (F.
B. 1954). Address requests to:

Prompt and skillful darning

If possible, use ravelings from
a leftover scrap of the fabric
or from seam or hem. Length
wise yarns are best for length

for crosswise darning. Imitate

Timely Farm Question!
Q. What can I do to control
lice and mites among my chick
ens?
A. Warm spring weather usu
ally causes an increase In in
festation by lice and mites. A
heavy infestation carf lower egg
production. The pests may also
spread to the brooder house
and cause unthrifty chicks.
Several hens should be check
ed. If lice are present, use
either sodium tlouride or a roosi
paint. A second treatment
should be made in 10 days to

HOW 10 SAVE 1000 HOMES!
DROWN YOUR CAMPFIRE! Be sure it's com*
pletely out, because one forest fire started by your
campfire may easily destroy enough saw timber
to build a thousand homes! Last year, fires actu
ally burned enough U. S. timber to build 86,000 five-room houses.
BREAK YOUR MATCH! In 1950 forest fires <
started by people turned to useless ashes enough >
pulpwood to provide a year's supply of paper to
every newspaper in the United States ... they
covered an area larger than the state of Pennsylvania.
1
CRUSH YOUR CIGARETTE! When the forest % .
burns, you lose and everyone loses. Not only is
invaluable timber destroyed, but camping and
recreation areas are gone. And after the fire come
drought, floods, loss of hydroelectric power, loss of jobs.
BURN BRUSH CAREFULLY! Check with your local ranger, fire or
forest warden before burning brush or rubbish. Careless burning s i
started one fire that ravaged 50,000 acres, killed four men. Suppose
your cjirelessness caused such tragedy.
LET'S STOP THIS SHAMEFUL WASTE) Such wanton destruction of
our natural resources, such shameful weakening of our national
security CAN BE PREVENTED! Most fires are started by people
like you . . . people who mean well but are careless just once. Will
you be the next one who starts a fire? This will be an extremely crit
ical year. Give us your promise that you will be careful!
