I morning's wear and have a firm
j finish to resist soil. Because
moist leather is weak and easily
scratched out of shape, liquid
cleaner should not be applied to
I shoes on the feet or just be
fore wearing.
First step in cleaning is to
j brush off dust, mud, and old,
dry cleaner.
The dressing or polish best to
use depends on the type of
shoes. No one preparation suits
all white shoes. The label should
tell the kind of leather or fab
ric on which the preparation is
to be used. Generally, white
shoe soap is best for smooth
leather because it cleans with
out drying or hardening leath
er. Cleaning powder may be bet
ter than liquid cleaner tor
white suede or other napped
leather. Dressing that contains
whiting or chalk may be used
successfully on cloth shoes, but,
before applying, brush off the
leavings of previous applica
tions.
Shoes worn without stockings
need cleaning inside as well as
out, unless protected by socks
that fit inside shoes. Rub out I
the inside of the shoes frequent- I
ly with a cloth moistened with '
soapy water, but take care not
to get shoes wet with too much
water. Powder in shoes helps
against prespiration damage.

Timely Farm Questions
Q. How can I prevent aro
matic tobacco from being dam
aged by mold after it has been
sun-cured and is hanging in
the barn?
A. Roy H. Crouse, extension
agronomy specialist, State col
lege, says growers can reduce
the chances of molding and
barn-scalding by adding some
heat to the building during
periods of bad weather.
When dajnp weather occurs,
says Mr. Crouse, the heat in
buildings housing curing racks
should be kept at 90 to 100 de
grees. In this way the curing
process can be continued in the
barn. Curing takes from eight
to 12 days under ideal weather
conditions. Then the tobacco is
ready to be put up in tempor
ary bales ready for market.
Q. Dixie Bright 101 tobacco
grows with a yellow cast. How
can I tell when it is ripe enough
to harvest?
A. Most growers of Dixie
Bright 101 are harvesting this
variety too green, says R. R.
Bennett, extension tobacco spe
cialist "at State college. "Nearly
everywhere I have been, farm
ers are priming 101 before it is
ripe and mature," -he asserts.
This lack of maturity, the spe
cialist adds, will show up after
the tobacco Is cured.
Mr. Bennett suggests that
growers allow Dixie Bright 101
to become very ripe ? to the ex
tent of almost beginning to fire
at the tip of the leaf? before
harvest. Then, he says, only
two or three leaves per plant
should be harvested at a time.
More than 1,000,000 bushels of
commercial apples will be har
vested in the state in 1951.
