Thirty-two 4-H club members
and leaders of Haywood county
are now able to give a first
hand account of how many peo
ple work, play, and live in the
wide open spaces of Texas, for
they recently returned from a
one-week visit there.
The Tar Heel group made the
trip to Denton county, Texas,
where they were housed in
farm homes and were kept busy
with a round of activities which
kept them going from early
morning until late at night.
"It was the most wonderful
experience of my life," says Bet
ty Felmet of the Waynesville
High 4-H club. "The Texans
surely lived up to their Indian
name ? "Tejas, meaning friend
ship ? for nowhere have we ever
found people as fr.endly as in
Denton county."
A chartered bus was used for
the excursion, which covered 11
days. Stops were made in sever
al Southern states.
The project is the second in
tersectional 4-H exchange und
ertaken by Haywood county.
The lirst was conducted with
Washington county, Iowa, in
1949 and 1950.
Next year, a 4-H group from
Denton county will visit Hay
wood.
Miss Mary Cornwell, Haywood
home agent, who accompanied
the group to Texas, says the
purposes of the exchange are
to enable a select group of 4-H
boys and girls to study first
hand the agriculture of another
area; to obtain a better under
standing of basic agricultural
conditions and community and
family living; to provide oppor
tunity for boys and girls of the
two regions to become better
acquainted; and to broaden the
group's knowledge of the South
ern states.
