If the homemaker who goes
shopp.ng for curtain fabrics Is
well acquainted with facts about
shrinkage and colorfastness, she
will get more for her money In
value and in satisfaction, -say
textile specialists.
In deciding how much yard
age she will need, the shopper
should ilgure on at least 100
per cent fullness in width, if
the curtains are not to be
skimpy, in other words, for at
tractive curtains, specialists sug
gest that the fabric be twice as
wide as the space to be covered.
Curtain buyers should also
make allowance for lengthwise
shrinkage. If there Is no label
on the curtain or fabric stating
whether it is pre-shrunk, the
allowance should be generous ?
around three Inches to the yard.
When selecting colored mate
rial, the buyer will do well to
look for a label carrying specific
Information about colorfastness.
Such labels as "colorfast to
washing," or "colorfast to dry
cleaning," are of course more
helpful then "colorfast".
! If she is looking for material
in a store which will lend
samples, the curtain shopper
may lind it wise to take home
.several lengths of fabrics and
j see whether they are suitable
for a particular room or win
dows. Such extra time and ef
fort may be well spent. The

Q. One of my fields has be

to get rid of the pest. Should
I try using chemicals or is there
another way to control it?
A. Glenn C. Klingman, in
charge of weed investigations,
says one of the best methods
is to use a heavy-growing dense
shade crop such as thickly

Treatment with weed control
chemicals Is rather expensive
for large areas. Small infested
areas can be treated this way,
but shade crops are more prac
tical for the large Infestations.
Q. Will the new Insecticide
TDE control tobacco horn
worms? ? ,
A. Yes. T. M. Dobrovsky, ex
tension entomologist at State
college, says TDE is giving good
control of both hornworms and
budworms. The Insect control
specialist warns leaf growers
that a new and hea y infesta
tion of hornworms has appear
ed in the old belt and other
tobacco areas.
Mr. Dobrovsky advised that 30
pounds of TDE be used for each
acre If applied as a 5 per cent
dust. If the 10 per cent dust .s
used, apply 20 pounds per ac. e,
depending on the size of planl i.
When wettable powder is used,
two pounds of the 50 per cent
TDE In 50 gallons of water Is
effective. Apply from 50 to 80
gallons of the spray per acre,
depending on plant size.
