WEDS GEORGE R. CONLEY
Mrs. Grace Hall Moore and
George R. Conley were married
' at the hoirte of Mrs. Hall's
brother-in-law and sister, Mr.
and Mrs. Adolf Zoellner, Janu
ary 10 at 7 p. m. Only members
of the Immediate families were
present.
The Zoellner home was deco
rated throughout with native
greenery and Christmas cactus.
The ceremony was performed
by the Rev. C. E. Murray.
An informal cake cutting was
given following the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Conley will live
on the Murphy road.

MISS SARBY IN OHIO
Hugh Johnston, of Cleveland,
Ohio, formerly of Franklin, was
married January 12 to Miss
Patricia Lee Sarby at the Trin
ity Lutheran church in Lake
land, Ohio.
Mrs. Johnston is the daugh
ter of Mrs. Mary L. Sarby, of
Lakeland. Mr. Johnston, is the
son of Mrs. T. J. Johnston, of
Franklin

ENGAGED TO SGT. WOODY
Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Moore,
of Franklin, have announced the
engagement of their daughter,
Miss Betty Lee Moore, to S. Sgt.
Paul B. Woody, of Asheville and
Washington, D. C.
Sgt. Woody is the son of Lon
nie Woody, of Asheville, and of
the late Mrs. Woody.
The wedding will take place
Sunday at 6 p. m. at the Cowee
Baptist church.
Miss Moore was honored with
a miscellaneous shower by Mrs.
E. J. Whitmire yesterday (Wed
nesday) ? evening at her home,
"Sunny Side farm".

ham, one of four candidates seeking the Democratic party's nomination for governor of North
Carolina, visited Franklin last Thursday to sound out his support. Mr. Umstead spent most of
last week in the 12th congressional district and said he was more than satisfied with response

derwent an operation at Angel
clinic last Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kemper
and children have returned to
their home in Minot, N. Dak.,
following a visit of several
weeks with Mrs. Kemper's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Slagle.
Miss Ann Lyle, who has been
working in Tampa, Fla., for the
past year, is visiting her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Lyle.
Pvt. Thomas Crawford has re
turned to Fort Sill, Okla., after
a visit with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Cecil Crawford.

Miss Gladys Sellers has taken
the apartment over the Macon
theatre for the remainder of
the winter.
Joseph E. Hannah, of Macon,
Ga., former resident of Franklin,
has sufficiently recovered to be
removed to his home from the
Macon hospital, where he has
been under treatment far the
past eight weeks. Mr. Hannah
was hospitalized as a result of
Injuries suffered in an auto
mobile accident October 26.
Charles Davidson, of Culla
jsaja, has returned home after
a visit with his parents in
! Cambridge Springs, Pa.

For New N. C. Cancer
Institute
A special appeal for linen
donations for the North Caro
lina Cancer Institute in Lum
berton, which is scheduled to
open soon, was issued this week
by Mrs. Lester Conley, com
mander of the Macon County
unit of the American Cancer
society.
According to Mrs. Conley,
towels, wash cloths, single bed
sheets, pillow cases, rubber
sheets, blankets, and single cot
ton bedspreads will be needed
for needy cancer cases, when
the institute opens. Civic organ
izations are especially urged to
help with this phase of the
project, she said.
Organizations desiring to give
either cash donations or linens
may telephone Mrs. Conley at
Franklin, 104.

Road Work Finished
In Macon Last Month
Poplar Cove road, in this
county, was graded, drained,
and surfaced with traffic-bound
macadam for .4 miles in De
cember, the State Highway com
, mission chairman, H. W. Jordan,
announced this week.
Paving in the tenth highway
division totaled 9.85 miles for
the month, he said
