5-Point Legislative | Program To Be Sought By Education Forces ; A five-point basic legislative program has been adopted by the North Carolina United Forces for Education, according to H. L. Bryant, chairman of Macon County's recently formed Citizens Committee for Educa tion. The two cooperating groups represent a wide variety of agencies and organizations in terested in education. The local committee will meet January 31 to consider the five point program, It was announc ed. The program, it was explain ed, to eliminate the continuing shortage of white elementary teachers; guarantee that every child shall be taught by a prop erly qualified teacher supplied with adequate instructional ma terials; and make sure that no child is denied the privilege of attending school In a building that is safe and sanitary. The five legislative goals are: "1. The Immediate reduction of class size from 32 pupils per teacher to 30 pupils per teach er, based on average dally at tendance, and the reduction to 25 paplls per teacher as soon as possible. "2. A salary schedule of $2600 to $4100 for A certificated teachers, as a minimum, based ' on present conditions with com- 1 mensurate increases in salaries 1 of other school personnel. The 1 salary schedule for A certifi- ? cated teachers shall be based on not more than 12 incre ments. (The present salary range of A-certificate teachers is $2,200 to $3,100.) "3. Sufficient funds to employ an adequate number of properly qualified attendance enforce ment personnel. "4. Appropriations not only to meet increased costs of current expense items but also to pro vide additional required services and supplies (such as improved janitor and jnaid services, cler ical aid for schools and more instructional materials.) "5. Capital outlay funds by bond issue to complete the present school building program, these funds to be distributed on the basis of need and ability to provide." So far this year, Pied mont and Eastern North Caro ina 4-H boys and girls have planted a quarter of a million loblolly pine seedlings furnished ? them by the North Carolina 1 Pulp company, in all, 187 mem- ' bers in 27 counties have ordered 250,450 seedlings. Demonstration Club Meetings For Week Are Announced Meetings of home demonstra tion clubs in the county for the coming week have been an nounced by Mrs. Florence S. Sherrill, county home demon stration agent. They are as fol lows: Today (Thursday) Clark's Chapel club with Mrs. Dorothy Ashe at 1:30 p. m. Franklin Business Women at the Agricul tural building at 7:30 p. m. Mrs. goals should be reached: Extended term of teachers' employment; adequate sick leave and retirement benefits; im proved employment security; continuation and expansion of the present programs In school health; special education and vocational education; and an adequate supply of school busses. Livestock Marketing Discussed A new bulletin on "Livestock Marketing Agencies in North Carolina" has just been pub lished by the North Carolina Experiment station. The publication covers types, Sam Bryson, Mrs. Shirley Hous ton, and Mrs. J. Harry Thomas, hostesses. Friday: Cowee club at the school at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday: Watauga club with Mrs. Jess Thompson and Mrs. John Snyder at 2 p. m. Thursday: County council meeting at the Agricultural building at 10 a. m. County wide meeting in the interest of music at the Franklin Methodist church at 1:30 p. m. number, and location of live- 1 stock marketing agencies; vol ume, seasonality,' and type of livestock handled by type of market, source, disposition, and , destination of animals, methods of transporting livestock to and , ' from marketing agencies; phys- j ical facilities and practices of i market agencies, and public reg- j ] ulation of livestock markets. The study was made by Walt- j er P. Cotton, associate professor | of agricultural economics. The ( bulletin is part of a long-range research program on livestock 1 marketing by the experiment ! stations of several Southern I states. The efforts are being I coordinated through a South j em Regional Technical commit ! tee, in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Agricultural Econom ics. Some of the conclusions reached by Mr. Cotton are that many of the markets are too small, most sales are not made by grade, and shrinkage of ani nals bought at auctions is ex lessively high. ' Livestock Marketing Agencies in North Carolina," issued as Experiment Station Bulletin No. 577, contains 64 pages, includ ing several charts and a num- j ber of appendix tables. Single copies may be obtained free ! from the local county agent or by writing the Department of Publications, State College Sta tion, Raleigh. Corn yields of 100 or more bushels per acre have been produced by hundreds of North Carolina farmers in the last few years.
