No 1 have ever seen," and he relatec j how Mr. Mitchell, who carried a German luger, dropped run ning game more than a IOC yards away. "Nothing was safe when 1 was looking for bait, not even a chickadee," the trapper re flected. Cover 100 Miles Back when they were part ners, the two each maintained roughly 100 miles of trap line Game included beaver, otter mink, marten (American sable) fisher, muskrat, lynx, foxes wolf, bear, and "just about any thing with fur!" Their territory was about 25C miles south of Hudson Bay land frequentel only by Indians and trappers. In the winter the mercury dips to 65 below zero and in the summer climbs tc a mucky, warm, 90 degrees. (Mr Mitchell has lost toe nails foui times from freezing). Snow shees were, and still are, essential. A trapper's diet is mostly meat and what few supplies he can "pack in" on his back. Mr. Smith recalled that one time his partner pack ed 300 pounds of supplies on his back for more than half a mile. . . back when I was a little younger," Mr. Mitchell explain ed, smiling. However, at 50 he appears to have the constitu tion of a man in his 30's and quite possibly he could still du plicate the feat. Season Split The trapping season generally is split into three parts, the two explained, to enable a man to sell his furs and restock on supplies. A trapper hits the "bush" about September 1 and I comes "out" about Christmas, |. returns soon after and stays until March, emerges to get I supplies, and then goes back 1 until June. During these periods . the trapper moves about 10 I miles a day, inspecting his trap line, collecting catches, and re j setting traps. "Trap shacks", , crude shelters of logs, moss and . dirt chunked, were spaced about every 10 miles along the trap per's 100-mile strip, they said. Keeping Warm Is 'Simple' ' "This 65 below zero . . . how ' did you keep from freezing?" ' they were asked. Simple: Heavy snow shoe moccasins, ' two pairs of wool socks, one pair of heavy felt insoles, wool I underwear, wool shirt, wool mackinaw pants, mackinaw coat, wool cap with ear {laps, wool and leather mittens. I "Look here, he's still got his wool underwear on," Mr. Smith laughed, opening the collar of his partner's shirt. He did! and it was almost a springy day in the Nantahalas. Speaking~~of his summers at J the fire lower in the bush coun try, the visiting trapper called I on his sense oi humor again to show that he "had the drop" on civilization. 80 Miles From Store "I'm 80 miles from the near est grocery store and my orders I are delivered in about two hours." "I'm keeping him. here by brute force now," Mr. Smith explained. But it takes more than brute force to hold a man who hasn't missed a trapping season in al most 32 years. Mr. Mitchell left after a couple of days here, "in love with the beautiful scenery here", but it's time to start trapping beaver in Ontario.
