Giving your farm a spring
cleanup will make it much saf
? er as well as much more at
tractive, says S. W. Mendenhall,
county farm agent.
He points out that tools, bags
of feed, buckets, and just com
mon debris and trash are re
sponsible for hospitalizing one
out of every five accident vic
tims on the farm. This was
shown by a study conducted by
the National Safety council. The
largest single cause of injuries,
other than the personal factor
of poor judgment, is disorder.
To play safe, the farmer
should correct such hazards as
broken, wobbly steps which
might cripple someone for life;
tottery old buildings that some
times cause serious injuries;
unmarked bottles of poison, and
poisons left within the reach
of children which often cause
tragedies; accumulations of
trash, paper, scattered boxes
and boards, rags and rubbish
which are serious fire hazards
and ideal breeding places for
rats. /
"Springtime", says the coun
ty agent, "is nature's cleanup
time, a time when the earth
takes on a new, refreshed look.
Let's help nature by cleaning
up around the farm and in the
farm home, which will not only
give the farm a new look but
make it a safer and easier place
for working and living."
He adds that if every farm
family would conduct a spring
cleanup campaign, both inside
and out, it would go a long way
toward eliminating fire and ac
cident hazards, providing a
more healthful environment,
and conserving food which is
badly needed all over the world.

Wiring Check
Spring clean-up is a good
time to look into your electrical
affairs around the house. Unlike
rubbish which collects and be
comes a visual annoyance, elec
trical faults don't show until
suddenly a painful shock or a
flash of fire warns you that
something's wrong.
To ward off any such dis
aster, use your annual clean-up
to have electric cords and ap
pliances replaced or repaired,
advises the National Board of
Fire Underwriters.
This is the time to take all
electric appliances that are op
erating poorly or are obviously
broken to an electrician. His ex
pert job will usually be vastly
superior to that of the home
handyman, the fire experts sug
gest.
In inspecting your electrical
equipment the National Board
outlines these points to check:
1. Inspect flexible cords for
breaks in insulation or severe
kinks in cords which may rip
their protective covering.
2. See that no flexible cord is
tacked down on baseboards,
under irugs or through door
ways.
3. Any new electrical installa
tions should be made in accord
ance with the National Electric
al code.
4. Use only 15 ampere fuses
in the household circuits or a
15 ampere circuit breaker. Some
heavy duty household appli
ances may require larger fuses.

appliances plugged into one
outlet.
Budhist College
Is Revived After
, Seven Centuries
A center for International
cooperation among Budhist
countries has been set up on
the ancient site of Nalanda
university, in Bihar, which was
an Intellectual center for many
countries (or six centuries, prior
to Its destruction early In the
13th century.
Called the Magadha Research
institute, the new center will
concentrate on "recapturing
some of the intellectual glories
of Its lllustrous predecessor,"
with emphasis on the study of
Budhist history, literature and
philosophy, and on the langu
ages of the various Budhist
countries.
Yugoslav Scholars

Scholarships awarded by the
United Nations, . the British
council and the French and
American governments will per
mit 27 Yugoslav scholars to
study abroad during 1952.
Scholarships awarded by these
and other countries last year
provided such opportunities for
a total of 150 scholars.
International Job
Service Is Set Up
Britian, French, Belgium, Hol
land and Luxenburg have set
up an international employment
service, fey which vacancies
which cannot be filled locally
by the country concerned, are
thrown open to citizens of the
other four nations. Conditions
and pay are in each case as
good far the foreign workers as
for the local ones.
Film Planned
At 'W^tt^rs Of
Coweeta' Here
W. W. Bergoffn and Richard
Moshar, of the Washington of
fice of the U. S. Forest Service,
were at the Coweeta Experi
ment statioh recently making
plans to film a full-length mo
tion picture there later this
year. The title of the film will
be "Waters of Coweeta".
Mr. Bergoffn will serve as di
rector and Mr. Mosher will be
the technical chief. They will
be assisted by Gordon Merrick,
of the Southeastern Experiment
station. i
After spending a week in
specting the area, Mr. Bergoffn
and Mr. Moshaar returned to
Washington to prepare the
script for this film, which is
expected to be released next
faU.

tion was about two-fifths larg
er than the 1935-39 average,
even though man-hours of farm
labor were down sharply.
