District Legion Auxiliary Meeting Attended By 36 Thirty-six women from Mur phy, RobbinsvlUe, and Franklin attended a meeting of the American Legion auxiliary's 20th district here Friday at the Methodist church. The session marked the first time the district has met as a separate unit, according to aux iliary officials. In the past, the 20th district, which embraces Murphy, Rryson City, Cherokee, Fontana Dam, Robbinsvllle, and Franklin, met jointly with aux iliaries of the 19th district be cause the 20th is a small dis trict, it was explained. Highlights of Friday's session Included an address) by Mrs. E. P. Rhyne, of Hickory, state president; reports by presidents of attending auxiliaries; and recognition ol six Gold Star mothers. President of the Franklin aux iliary, Mrs. E. W. Renshaw, was nominated as committeewoman for the 20th district in an elec- j tlon slated for the state con- 1 ventlon in Durham In June. Mrs. W. A. Hoover, of Murphy, was nominated as alternate. The Gold Star mothers, spe cial guests at luncheon, were Mrs. C. A. Bales, of Robbins vllle, Mrs. Paul Sims, of Murphy, and Mrs. Frank M. Higdon, Mrs. Henry W. Cabe, Mrs. Joe Setser, and Mrs. J. L. Martin, all of *1 ? 1-1!^ r raniuui. Speaking on the year's ac tivities of the Franklin auxili ary, Mrs. Renshaw reported that $196.02 had been, raised. The amount included $113.30 raised in the annual poppy sale. Expenditures included $72 to veteran's hospitals at Oteen and Swannanoa and an additional $35 for Christmas packages for 'veterans in the hospital. Gifts of food and clothing locally to taled $60, the president report ed. Presiding at the session was Mrs. Gilmer A. Jones, district ?mmitteewoman, of Franklin. Mrs. Renshaw welcomed the jroup and the response was nade by Miss Ellen Carver, iresident of the Robbinsvllle init. Luncheon was served by members of the church Wesley an guild. Moose Lodge Installs Officers For Year The installation of Officers featured a meeting of the Loyal Order of Moose last week. Z. Weaver Shope was install ed as governor, Henry B. Cabe, junior governor, the Rev. R. L. Poindexter, prelate, Lawrence Long, sergeant-at-arms, Lake V. Shope, secretary, and George Stanfield, three-year trustee. Paul West is past governor. Otto Eighth Graders Will Present Two Plays The eighth grade at Otto school will present two plays Saturday evening at the school. Scheduled for enactment are "The Missing Line" and "The Master Salesman". Proceeds will be used by the eighth graders for a trip to Cherokee, according to principal E. G. Crawford, who is directing the plays. Admission will be 10 cents for students and 25 for adults. McSween, promotion secretary, Mrs. Ruth McCollum, secretary, and Mrs. J C. E. Murray, coordinator. Will Be Crowned May Queen At Otto Today ? Betty Henson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Henson, will be crowned Queen of May at ceremonies today at 1 p. m., at Otto school, according to Prin cipal E. G. Crawford. The queen's attendants will be J Inez Ledford and Joy McCall. Holland Participating In Nevada Atomic Tests Pfc. Alfred M. Holland, Jr., of Cullasaja, is stationed at Camp Desert Rock, Nev., with an in fantry regiment of the 47th Di vision, a unit participating in a series of atomic tests being conducted at the camp, the army has announced. Defective brakes were the cause of 1,560 traffic accidents I in North Carolina last year.
