C. Communities Depend On Trucking Jeff B. Wilson, director of in formation and safety of the North Carolina Motor Carriers association, Raleigh, speaking before the Highlands Rotary club last week said, that 1800 communities in North Carolina depends entirely on trucks to bring them everything they eat, wear and use. Mr. Wilson devoted much of his talk to the three E's of highway safety, engineering, en forcement, and education. He said that in addition to being policed by the state highway patrol, city and county police officers, the trucking industry polices itself, pointing out that the industry has road patrols, company supervisory patrols, and insurance patrols. He reminded the group that j professional truck drivers are . trained either under company ? operation or at the truck driv- | ers training school operated by North Carolina State college. He ( said that during a recent bien nium, truck taxes alone paid 83 per cent of the $24,000,000 spent by North Carolina for new pri mary road construction. Botanist Speaks Tonight On Wildflowers; Second Lecture In 25th Anniversary Series "Our Southern Appalachian Wildflowers", will be the sub ject of the Illustrated lecture by Dr. A. J. Sharp, of the Uni versity of Tennessee, this (Thursday) evening at 8 o'clock at the Museum of Natural His tory building. The lecture is the second in the series sponsored by the Highlands Biological station in observance of, the 25th Anniversary of its found ing. Dr. Sharp is an authority on Southern Appalachian flora. He is professor of botany at the University of Tennessee, and has served as botanist and ranger naturalist with the Great Smoky Mountains Na tional park. Among offices in scientific societies, he has serv ed as secretary of the South ern Appalachian Botanical club and as president of the Sulli van Moss society. Dr. Sharp has been the recipient of several research grants for study in Mexico. He is a member of the board of trustees of the High lands Biological station. Dr. Sar gent and Miss Howell paid tribute to Henry M. Wright, local trustee and staff natural ist, classing him as one of the leading botanists of this section from whom they had learned much. In his opening remarks, Dr. Sargeant said that Miss Howell was one of the strong est links In the chain that had, kept the station going for the past several years.
