ty sub-district Methodist Youth
Fellowship were installed Sunday
at a meeting at Wilson Liclc.

For Area Session
Nantahala Power and Light
Company will be host today
(Thursday) and tomorrow to a
meeting of the accident preven
tion committee of the Southeast
ern Electric Exchange.
Activities of the two-day session,
which is expected to draw about
25 representatives of 16 power
companies in the area, will center
at Nantahala Inn in Swain Coun
ty, according to company officials.
Nantahala President John M.
Archer, Jr., will welcome the rep
resentatives and tHeir families this
morning. A bus tour of Nantahala
hydro-electric developments is
scheduled tomorrow.
Death Takes
Mrs. Gray
At Age 90
Mrs. Mary McConncll Gray. 90,
widow of William H. Gray and
one of the county's oldest natives,
died Wednesday of last week
(June 1) at 8:30 a. m., at her
home in the Morrison community.
She had been ill for two years.
Funeral services were conducted
Friday at 11 a. m. at the home
by the Rev. R. L. Poindexter,
the Rev. James Sanders, and the
Rev. Claude Ledford. Burial was
in the McConnell Cemetery.
Born May 7, 1865, Mrs. Gray
was the daughter of John and
Betty Sellers McConnell. She was
a member of the Morrison Pres
byterian Church. Her husband
died December 12, 1950.
Surviving are two sons, Clifford
Gray, of Ridgecrest, and John
Gray, of the home; two daughters,
Miss Nina Gray, of the home,
and Miss Clara Abercrombie, of
Daytona Beach. Fla.; a brother,
N. A. McConnell, of Franklin,
Route 2, seven grandchildren; and
10 great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were
Dock Bates, Barnett Bates, Ernest
Stamey, Robert Stamey, Lester
Vinson, and Lawson Pitts.
Potts Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
Miss Morgan
Gets Honorary
W. C. Degree
Miss Lucy C. Morgan, founder
and director of the Penland School
of Handicrafts and the Penland
Weavers and Potters. Penland, was
awarded an honorary degree of
doctor of humane letters at the
63rd commencement excercises of
Woman's College of the University
of North Carolina, Greensboro,
on June 6.
Miss Morgan, formerly of Frank
lin, is a sister of Mrs. H. E. Freas
and Dr. A. Rufus Morgan, of
Franklin.
PYATTS VISIT HERE
The Rev. J. D. Pyatt, former
pastor of the Franklin Methodist
Circuit, and Mrs. Pyatt were here
this week. They came up for Sun
day's home-coming services at
Bethel church, and stayed over
for a day or two to visit friends.
Mr Pyatt is now retired.
Mrs. Mantion Stiles and Miss
Elizabeth Sweatman attended the
wedding of their niece. Miss Dixie
Nell Southard, in Sylva Saturday.
Club Holds
Picnic Meet
The Franklin Garden Club met
(or a picnic supper Monday even
ing in the I. T. Peek garden. The
husbands of members attended.
Mrs. Margaret Smith, who is
with the N. C. Extension Service,
showed landscape slides showing
different sections of the country.
It was vo^ed to build a fence a
round the square and to beautify
it. It also was decided that the
garden club would decroate two
floats for the Franklin Centennial
parade.
Hostesses for the meeting were
Mfs. John M. Archer. Jr.. Mrs.
Prelo Dryman, and Mrs. Ted
Reber.
Approximately 50 were present.
The next meeting will be at
"Dixie Hall", with Miss Hope
Daniels. July 11. at 1 o'clock.
