The student in the foreground holds a marker showing where the demon stration car (left background, turning around) applied brakes. Students further down are mea suring the distance it took the car to come to a complete stop. Eye-Opening Demonstrations Staged By Safety Vehicle A specially equipped safety auto mobile staged some eye-opening demonstrations here Friday for students of Franklin and High lands. Sponsored by an insurance com pany, the car was used to demon strate the fallacy of boastful "stopping on a dime." Guns rig ged to the automobile filed paint bullets on the pavement at three intervals: when the "danger" was first seen, when the driver's foot touched the brake, and when the vehicle came to a full stop. With students watching and scoring test results, stopping was demonstrated at 20, 30, and 40 m. p. h. by students and adults. At Franklin High, student Craw ford Moore, at 20 m. p. h.. came to a full stop in 37 feet. 2'i inches. His reaction distance was 12 feet, 4 inches and his braking distance was 24 feet, 10 inches. His total stopping distance was under the national average of 44 feet. Also at 20 m. p. h., student , Nancy Cable beat his test by braking in 33 feet, 3 inches (girls . have a faster reaction time than I boys, the Instructor explained i. Teacher Dick Stott took the wheel for the 30 m. p. h. test, braking in 72 feet. 2 inches. His reaction distance was 20 feet, 2 inches and his braking time 52 feet. The national average at this speed is 106 feet. Chief of Police C. D. Baird clip ped some footage from the nation al average at 40 m. p. h. His total stopping distance was 111 feet. 4 inches as compared with the national figure of 132 feet. His reaction distance was 30 feet. 4 inches, and his braking distance 80 feet. In staging the demonstrations, the instructor emphasized that even more distance is needed un der actual driving conditions. To back this up. he noted that the test drivers were aware that they were going to make an emergency stop and were prepared mentally, the brakes and tires on the car were in excellent condition, and the tests were conducted under ideal conditions. Including dry pavement. Student reactions to the demon PIDDINHEAD President Wilson used to find delight in relating how he once had his special car sidetracked at Hannibal. Mo., so he could make a quiet pilgrimage to the monu ment erected on the bluff to Mark Twain. Unknown to the natives, he asked one of them if he re j membered Tom Sawver "Never heard of him", the Mis j sourian replied. i "Do you recollect Huckleberry Finn?" asked the President. "Finn? Finn?" mused the na tive. "There was a family of Finns down the road a piece, but I doir't recollect there was a Huckleberry among them". "Do you happen to recall Pud-' j din'head Wilson?" "Oh. yes. sir: I voted for him Custom Built Woodworking "We Specialize In KITCHEN CABINETS" Also WE STOCK FORMICA FRANKLIN WOODWORKS JACK GRIBBLE, Ownrr strations ranged from new-found respect to open-mouth astonish ment. THE IRON CURTAIN "Remember jrian that thou art Dust, and unto dust thou shalt return." On ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent, every Cath olic knelt at the altar in his church and as the Priest made the Sign of the Cross with Ashes upon his forehead, he repeated the above words ? a reminder that some day he must pass through the iron curtain of death. The forty days of Lent is a solemn commemoration of our Re demption by our Lord's death on the Cross. The term "Lent" comes from an old English Word, "Lenten, meaning spring. The liturgical Season of Lent more or less coincides with the season of spring. The season of Lent is also a reminder that our stay here is strictly limited, that this world is intended to be merely a ves tibule to a new and better life ? that approaching death is not to be feared if we play the game of life according to the rules which our Lord Jesus Christ has left for us. These rules of life are explained in the talks which are given each Sunday at St. Francis Church. You are always welcome to be present. Sincerely, Father Robert Healy ST.
