Hard Work And Enthusiasm Help Waldrocp Family By RAY HEMPHILL (Macon Supervisor I Enthusiasm, hard work, and "stick-to-it-tiveness," with Farmers Home Administration assistance, has taken a Macon County family a long way toward successful poul try farming. This is the C. Robert Waldroop family of Franklin, Route 1. Prior to 1949, Mr. Waldroop was engaged in public work. He wasn't too happy with this work and didn't find it too financially suc cessful. He owned a small farm on Route 1 and decided to try his hand at the poultry business. With about 120 chickens, the Wai droop family was on the way. The first years were hard sledding. Dis couraged, but not defeated, Mr. Waldroop looked around for some way to enlarge his enterprise so as to increase his income. Contacts Agency In 1953, Mr. Waldroop contacted the Farmers Home Administration, which is an agency set up to help eligible operators of family-type farms get ahead through better farming. FHA funds were advanc ed to purchase equipment, feed, and baby chicks. With the advice of the county supervisor, Mr. and Mrs. Waldroop made a plan for the development of their poultry business, other farm sidelines, and betterment of family living con ditions. A plan was made for the first year and a long-time plan for the next five years. After three years with the pro gram, the Waldroops now boast a recently completed poultry house for 1,500 hens, bringing the total carrying capacity of their houses to 2,300 hens. The buildings are modernly equipped. Their old farm house has been remodeled and is now an up-to-date three-bedroom house. A cement egg storage room was built in the basement. A 20 foot freezer was bought. The kitch en was equipped with modern cabi nets and an electric stove. Has Beef Cows In addition to the poultry busi ness, Mr. and Mrs. Waldroop keep about five beef cows, from which he sells veal calves. A half acre of strawberries provides a good profit in the spring months and a well-kept garden in plentiful supply of fresh vegetables. Mrs. Waldroop is a most im portant person in this farming enterprise. Her enthusiasm and ?work have been a determining factor in the family's success. She not only helps with the chickens and eggs, but al&o works in the garden and keepsHhe freezer and cans filled with a good, well bal anced supply of food. At sewin? and remodeling clothing for her self and two daughters. Mrs. Wal droop is excellent. The clothing worn by Mary Jo, 13, and Eliza beth Ann, 6. demonstrate her abil ity. Evidence of Mfs. Waldroop's industry is seen throughout the house in attractive curtains and furnishings. Ronnie, 11. as well as the girls, helps with the chickens and other farm and home work. The entire family goes to Carson Chapel Church and is active in commun ity affairs. <_?>? - THE SICK ! Angel Hospital Clifton Z. Ledford, of Frank lin, admitted for treatment.
