This Week With Macon County Agents By ROY ISLEY (Assistant Agent) Most Macon county soils are deficient in one or more of the essential plant nutrients which are needed for high forage pro duction. In view of this fact, farm ers who are planning to seed al falfa, ladinc clover and orchard irass or an> (ic.'.'.anent type pas ture or meadow this fall should have their soil tested now and make field applications of lime and fertilizer necessary amounts for optimum soil conditions for establishment of the crop. According to a recent study by the N. C. Experiment Station, ad ditions of lime, phosphate, and potash brought a yield of 6,103 pounds of dry hay per acre. When only phosphate and potash were used, the yield was 2,607 pounds of hay. On plots where lime and phosphate were used the yield was 3,274 pounds, while plots treated with lime and potash yielded only 1,031 pounds. As can be observed, the yield varied from a half ton to three tons per acre from a par tial to complete fertilization pro gram. To find out what your land needs, send soil samples early to the Soil Testing Division, State Department of Agriculture, Ral eigh. The laboratory will analyze the sample and return results to the farmer, along with lime and fertilizer recommendations for par ticular fields, free of charge. Soil sample boxes and instructions can be obtained from the county agent's office in the Agricultural Building. The question often arises, "What is PH?" Most farmers know that it means sour soil or sweet soil, depending on whether or not the land needs lime. "PH" is just a symbol and means the numerical index or value of acidity. PH is measured by a scple of numbers from 0 to 14, ranging by tentks of a point. Any number below 7.0 would mean a "sour soil" and above 7.0 would be a "sweet soil". The lower the number the more acid the soil and, therefore, the more time it requires to sweeten. The lime should be mixed thor oughly with the soil for best re sults. If your soil needs lime, the amount needed will depend on several factors, such as amount of humus, clay content and degrse of acidity. Therefore, the best guide in liming is the soil sample report. The desirable soil PH or lime level varies with the crop being planted in rotation. I am listing below a few of the more impor tant crops Macon county farm ers and tl PH requirements for best results. , Ladino clover PH 6.0 or above Alfalfa PH 6.5 6.8 Orchmnd grass PH 5.0 5.5 Fescue PH 6.0 Red clover PH 6.5 Oats PH 6.0 Soybeans PH 6.0 Crimson clover PH 5.8 6.0 Lespedeza PH 6.0 Bluegrass PH 6.0 6.8 Cullasaja 4-H Club Works, Then Swims The Cullasaja Community 4-H Club met Tuesday of last week at the home of Mrs. Vernon Bryson.
