DEATH CLAIMS J. B. WATKINS Retired Highlands Merchant-F armenr Passes In Asheville James B. Watkins, 86-year-old retired merchant and farmer of Highlands, died Wednesday of last week (July 25) in an Ashe villa hospital after an extended illness. He had been in Asheville for three years. Funeral services for Mr. Wat kins were conducted Friday at 11 a. m. at the Highlands Methodist Church by the Rev. R. T. Houts, Jr., pastor, and burial was in the Highlands Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Neely Watkins: two daugh ters, Mrs. Louise Whltworth, of Asheville, and Mrs. Irene Russell, of Greenville, S. C.; two brothers, S. C. Watkins, of Pittsburg, Pa., and Charles Watkins, of Long Beach, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Price, of Highlands, Mrs. Cora Smith, of Long Beach, and Mrs. Leila McGulre and Mrs. Elsie Stiles, of Franklin. Serving as pallbearers were Charles Pierson, Sidney McCarty, Sid Carter, Frank Watkins, Fred Littleton, and Richard Howell. Bryant Funeral Home was In charge locally. j * vt * I ? " ?? ??? McMeans Passes In Winston-Salem Arnold McMeans, 53, husband of the former Miss Wyona Hughes, of the Rose Creek section of this county, died July 21 in Winston Salem where he was employed by the Hanes Knitting Company. Mr. and Mrs. McMeans lived at Rose Creek for several years. He was a native of Forsythe Coun ty. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Lee Bassett and Mrs. Aud rey Davis, both of Winston-Salem; two sons Kenneth McMeans. of Myers Hill, and Howard McMeans, also of Winston-Salem. Services were conducted in Win ston-Salem. Pfc. Grigg Takes Part In Ceremony At Fort Polk, La. Pfc. Floyd E. Grigg, Jr., hus band of Mrs. Amanda Grigg, of Franklin, Route 3, recently took part in organization day ceremon ies at Fort Polk, La., celebrating the 1st Amored Division's 16th an niversary. Pfc. Grigg, who has served in Korea and Hawaii, is a supply specialist in the division's 73rd Field Artillery Battalion. He en tered the army in March, 1953.
