By ROBERT SCHMIDT At this time o t the year we usually have a lot of complaints that tomatoes are rotting on the lower side of blossom end of the fruit. This condition occurs on small green fruits as well as on fruits almost ripe. This is not an or ganic disease but rather a physi ological condition known as blos som-end rot! It appears to be caused, or at least aggravated, by extremes in weather conditions ? either by periods of dry weath er or periods of excessive rain j fall. In periods of dry weather I it can be held in check by pro I viding irrigation: however, don't I wait until you have lost a large percentage of your tomatoes, but irrigate as soon as lack of suffi | cient moisture is evident. Mulch ing plants with a deep layer of 1 straw will prevent loss of moisture from the soil and will cut down on the amount of blossom-end rot. j In the mountain area it will be i necessary to control late blicht if you wish to be successful with tomatoes. This is the same dis j ease that attacks Irish potatoes. Use a copper spray such as tri j basic copper sulphate or copper A compound and keep the plants well covered. Don't forget to prepare for a aood fall garden. If you have not aready done so, sow seed as soon as possible for broccoli, cauliflow er. collard, and cabbage plants. These may be grown in flats or boxes for transplanting to pots or tin cans for later transplanting ' *o the field. Broccoli and cauli flower require more , boron than is found in most of our soils. Boron deficiency causes hollow stems and an internal browning. To prevent this, mix two level 1 tablespoonsful of common borax with the fertilizer for 100 feet of row. Three good fall garden crops are Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, and leaf lettuce. These crops are not found commonly enough In our fall gardens. Head lettuce does not do as well In the fall as leaf lettuce. A good variety Is "Salad Bowl." There is still time to plant bush snapbeans and small butter beans for a fall crop. Try Wade, Tendergreen. Seminole, or Topcrop varieties of snapbeans and Hender son Bush or White Butterpea of the small butterbeans. Red cherry growers receive $20 million a year for the crop.
