Asheville's Mayor
And Councilmen Find
Tree For Meeting
Asheville Mayor Earl W. Eller
and his councilmen found their
shade tree here last Thursday
afternoon.
Relaxed and coat-less under
a tree at the side of the Holly
Springs community building,
the council held a token meet
ing after City Manager J. Wel
don Weir "made it official" by
sprinkling under their feet a
bag of dirt brought from Ashe
ville.
Coming here for the Holly
Springs "thank-you" picnic din
ner, they had requested a shady
tree under which to conduct
the municipal affairs that had
piled up during the week.
Mayor Eller hurled a legal
point which holds that council
meetings must be held inside
the corporate limits of Asheville
by declaring "I am going to
hold a meeting anyhow".
After City Manager Weir's
legal dirt-slinging, the council
passed a resolution saluting all
rural communities in the area
and congratulating Holly
Springs "for their progress in
farm, home, and community
improvements . . . which lead
ership in such accomplishments
will undoubtedly encourage all
other communities to strive to
ward greater rural progressive
development."'

Work Begins
On Belk's
Building
"Sidewalk superintendents"
are eyeing a new construction
project in Franklin.
Excavating is now under way
on Main Street for the new
Belk's Department Store, a
modern one-story structure that
will cost in the neighborhood
of $50,000.
A bulldozer started nosing out
a full basement last Thursday
on the lot between Macon
County Supply Company and
Burrell Motor Company, which
has been used by the latter
firm as a used car lot. W. C.
Burrell is building the store and
will lease it to Belk's.
Wiley Clark, local contractor,
is supervising construction.
According to Belk's Manager
T. H. Callahan, the new build
ing will more than double the
floor space the store now has
in the Ashear Building. Pres
ent floor space is 7,000 square
feet, while in the new building
it will be 16,000.
The building will be 50 by 160
feet, of concrete block and
steel construction with brick
veneer. The building front will
be of glass and aluminum, Mr.
Callahan sai(3.

Mr. Addington has been de

Has this change lightened the

"Not much," he reports. "I
