Crisp Golden CARROTS 2^ 17c MANY OF HOUSE NUMBERS STILL UNCALLED FOR Lions Ask Franklin Folk Who Haven't Bought Numbers To Do So Now About one-fourth of the town's residents have not yet got their house numbers and Lions Club of ficials this week asked that they do so as soon as possible. The numbers are being held at the Western Auto Associate Store by Lions Verlon Swafford and R. Roy Cunningham. The num bers are being sold by the club, and not by the store, Mr. Swaf ford emphasized. Club officials ask that those who have bought their numbers but not yet put them up, do so. Jan. 5: James Johnson, Frank Miss Jean Phillips Faces Second Phase Of College Scholarship Competition Miss Jean Phillips. 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nat Phillips, of Franklin. Route 5, who wants to be a school teacher, faces a difficult examination Saturday in Asheville. It is a three-hour college board test to determine if she will be one of the finalists in the Nation al Merit Scholarship competition . Miss Phillips was one of 162.000 seniors throughout the Uniteo .States who took the original col lege aptitude examination in Oc jtober. The test was given the 21 top members of the senior class of Franklin High School, of which she is a member. She is the only Macon County student to survive that phase of the elimination. Should she remain in the run ning after this week end's test. Miss Phillips will be one of about 7,000 seniors eligible for some 700 scholarships covering a four-year college education. The winners, to be chosen on the basis of their test scores and personal 'records, will be announced about April 25. I lin, Ollie Ward, Prentiss. The scholarships vary from $100 to $2,200. depending on the finan cial need of the student. The pro gram is underwritten by basic grants from the Ford Foundation and Carnegie Corporation, with other stipends coming from lead ing American industrial concerns. It is designed to search the na tion for those students most able to benefit from a college educa tion, regardless of means.
