Macon's Community Development To Be Talked By Agent In Raleigh County Agent T. H. Fagg has a speaking engagement slated in Raleigh the first of next week. Furthermore. he'H be using hU favorite subject ? rural community development progress in Macoi. County The county agent is to be one of several speakers addressing the third annual Farm Credit Con ference at N. C. State College Mon day and Tuesday. His talk or Macon's successes as bne of the leaders in development work is to tie in with a discussion of the W. N. C. Rural Community De velopment Program, which is sponsored by the Asheville Agri cultural Development Council. Ap pearing with him will be George H. V. Cecil. John Spicer. Aver:1 Fonda. Morris L McGough. and Claude Benson, all Ashevillian; . who have figured prominently in the program and its annual con test. N. C. State and the N. C. Bankers Association are Jointly sponsoring the credit conference. Several hundred bankers, farmers, and extension officials from over the state are expected to attend Mr. Fagg Conference Speaker . . . Local T alent Will Appear On TV Show Through talent and fact. Frank lin is to be featured on a 30-min ute telecast tomorrow < Friday > night at 7 o'clock over WFBC-TV, Greenville, S. C. The talent consists of six special acts selected here Saturday night from among 30 acts that audition ed for the "Bob Cox TV Talent Show", a program originating over WFBC-TV. The fact will center several points of interest in and around Franklin. Sponsored by the Little League Baseball organization, Saturday night's talent competition was held in the Franklin High gym nasium. The winners, who will appear on television, are the Henson Trio, vocalists Mary Lou Cabe and Jessie Carpenter, the Franklin Square Dance Team, a trio com posed of Sue Bailey, Myrtis Cabe, and Coleen Clouse, Neddy Bryson at the piano, and vocalists Kath leen and Peggy Roberts. The first three winners are slated to com pete in four-state competition in Spartanburg later in the year. A profit of more than $400 was realized by the Little League, ac cording to Robert C. (Bob) Car penter. president. In expressing his thanks to all who cooperated in the venture he singled out Woodrow Franklin and Doug Simpson for duty "above and be yond". League officials plan to use the money to light the ball park for night baseball. SING AT BETHEL The regular second Sunday sing ing convention of the southern division of the Macon County Singing Convention is slated for the Bethel Methodist Church Feb. 10 beginning at 1:45 p. m. Tom Henson, secretary, invites all sing ers and the public to attend. Lions Drive For Blind To Open Monday Franklin Lions will be knocking on front doors all over town Mon day night requesting donations for the club's annual White Cane Drive for the blind. Heading the drive is J. Ward Long and other members of the blind committee-. The door-to-door campaign is slated to start at 7 :30, following the Lions' weekly supper meeting. A quota of $350 has been set for the club, Mr. Long said this week. Of the amount, 45 per cent remained here for work with the blind and th? rest goes to the N. C. State Association for the Blind, a non-profit organization created by the Lions Clubs of the state. However, the balance will be returned here if needed, he said. The Lions also plan to carry their campaign to rural commun ities and to business sections at intervals during the remainder of the month. Mr. Long said the club probably will send a representa tive to each organized community meeting to briefly explain thj club's work with the blind and to request assistance. Locally, the club spends an average of $700 on the blind and needy each year, the chairman re vealed. This past year it spent $430 for glasses alone. Funds over and above those alloted from the White Cane Drive are raised with other club projects, including an annual broom sale. Assisting Mr. Long with cam paign planning are J. W. Good win, Vance Rucker, Dr. J. L. Hill, Jr., and Prelo Dryman. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hembree, of Dillard, Ga, spent Sunday vis iting Mr. Hembree's parents. Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Hembree, in Kyle. Paul Bryant has returned to his home in Kyle, after spending a week visiting his sister and broth er-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Prince, in High Point. TART TANGY RICE WITH PORK 2 cups (1-lb. can) sauerkraut cup uncooked rice 1 cup tomato sauce 1 cup water 1 small apple, grated , \ cup sliced onions *4 teaspoon salt ,6 thick pork chops 1 tablespoon shortening Drain sauerkraut. Combine with rice, tomato sauce, water, apple, onions, and salt in shallow 1*4 quart casserole. Brown pork chops in heated shortening. Arrange on top of cas serole. Cover. Bake in moderate oven (350? F.) about one hour, or until rice and meat are tender. Yields six serv ings. Agency Farmers in Macon obtained loans totaling $98,865 through the Farmers Home Administration during the last year. Ray F. Hemp hill, the agency's county supervis or, said this week. Repayments on loans outstand ing during the year totaled $24, 966. The agency has advanced credit to buy equipment, livestock, and other farm operating items need ed to place farms on an efficient operating basis, and to buy and improve family-type farms, he said. The local F. H. A. committee must approve each loan applica tion before funds can be advanced.
