MAY, NATIVE, DIES AT NANTAHALA Succumbs While Cutting Timber; Rites On Sunday Henry Grady May, of Nanta hala, died last Friday morning while cutting timber in the woods. He was 51. He was a native of Macon Coun ty and the son of Mrs. Lavada Smith May and the late Mark May. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Mrs. Norine Jones May; three daughters. Mrs. Susie Waters, Mrs. Betty Fields, and Mrs. Anna Jean Cross, all of Nan tahala; a son, Bill, of Hollywood, Fla.; five grandchildren and three brothers. Ebb, of Nantahala, Britt, of Detroit, Mich., and Carl, of Sweet Home, Ore. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday in Briartown Bap tist Church. Mr. May was a mem ber there. The Rev. 'John Free man officiated and burial was In the church cemetery. License Examiner To Talk Safety At Club Meeting R. V. Hooper, North Carolina driver's license examiner station ed at Franklin, will be guest speaker on a safety program Sat urday night at the North Frank lin Community Club meeting at Slagle 'Memorial Building. The covered dish supper will be gin at 7 o'clock, according to Pres ident H. H. Gnuse. Jr. He asked that club members note the change in time for this month's meeting. East Franklin Class Plans Valentine Party With an eye on an eastern trip this spring, the eighth grade at East Franklin Elementary School plans to hold a Valentine carnival tomorrow (Friday) night. Festivities are set to begin at 7:30. The class will use the proceeds of the benefit carnival for a trip to Raleigh in April to see the General Assembly in action and to visit other points of interest. Yeargan, and Mrs. Yeargan, at their home on Car toogechaye. COWEE GROUP HEARS SAFETY TALKS BY MEN Sherriel And Hooper ? 0? Program; ^School - Has United Benefit By MRS. GEORGE BYRD (Community Reporter) Approximately 50 persons direct ed their attention to talks by Joe Sherriel, field representative with the state highway division, and R. V. Hooper, state license examiner, at Thursday night's monthly meeting of the Cowee Rural Community Development Organization. The men stressed the import ance of attitude in highway safety. A Billy Oraham film on highway safety also was shown in con nection with the program. In the film, Mr. Graham said anyone who is careless and breaks traffic laws is also breaking the Golden Rule. Three Sunbeams from the Cowee Baptist Church, Ricky and Mack Brogden and Susie Gibson, gave the devotional with songs, stories, and Bible verses. Miss Josephine ^oper, the Sunbeam leader, di rected the devotional. Fred McGaha. chalirman of seed ing the banks at the school grounds asked Lem Clark, Luther Raby, and John Hurst to serve with him on this committee. A date to do the work will be set later., Mrs. McGaha was named chair man of a committee to secure and set shrubs on the school grounds. Jane Byrd, reporter for the Snow Hill Methodist Church, re ported an adult fellowship has been organized in connection with the M. Y. F. on Sunday nights. The Rev. Paul Heafner, pastor, was in charge of a four-week study course just completed. One Sunday School room has been painted by members and plans are to paint the three remaining rooms soon. The young adult class held its regular meeting: with a pot luck supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Byrd. A united benefit was held at the School Saturday night and $243 was raised. They are going for the final three days of "Speed Week," a week devoted to automobile racing on the Daytona sands. which sponsors the annual bene fit, will give 70 per cent of the proceeds to the March of Dimes, and 10 per cent each to the heart, cancer, and blind drives. Rickman celebrated his 85th birthday Sunday with a family picnic dinner at his home and the home of his grandson. Milton Pouts, on Cowee. Approximately 85 members of the family were present.
