CORRECTIONS
Two errors in last week's Pi-ess
are called to the attention of sub
scribers. The spelling of the name
Patten, in the Stephen C. Patten
obituary, is with an "e". instead
of an "o" as it appeared in print.
And, Jean Sutton was identified
as "Jean Setser" in the basketball
team picture on the front page.
Both errors are regretted.
tool and remarked that it was
strange that he would have to
come from New York City to
Franklin. N. C., to tee such a
modern gadget. The man was here
on business and told Mr. Conley
it was the first time he had ever
seen electric clippers.
The first power clippers had a
belt attachment similar to that on
a present-day dentist's drill, ac
cording to Mr. Conley. He mount
ed his on a trolley affair so the
clippers could be used by other
barbers in the shop. The stand
which came with the gadget is
still around the shop..
Since 1920, Mr. Conley has
worked for himself, the previous
nine years being spent in the
employment of other barbershop
owners. Those were the days of the
20 cent shave and 35 cent haircut,
he recalls. When he began barber
ing. before World War I, prices
were 10 and 20 cents, respectively.
Mr. Conley marked his anniver- 1
sary last week with no ceremony !
except to remark about It to cus
tomers. Aside from the price .
changes (haircuts now are $1. ex- 1
cept $1.25 for a crew cut, and 75
cents for a shave ?, there was one
thing different about his Thursday
of last week and the Feb. 14th
of 30 years ago: He and fellow
barber Ed Brogden shut up shop :
and went home at 6 p. m. For a
long time, it was customary to
stay open until around 10 o'clock
on week nights and until midnignt
on the week ends.
Mr. Conley's record closing time. :
he says, is the day he stayed open
until 3:25 a. m. "They just kept!
coming that night," he explains, i
