HOUK FAVORS
DOE PROPOSAL
Representative
Expects To Be
Home Week Ends
He'll vote for the controversial
bill to fix ail open season on does
in certain areas of the state. Rep
O. L. Houk said Monday before^ re
turning to the General Assembly
Representative Houk emphasi?
ed that he favored the open sea
son only in certain areas. He saic
he did not consider himself qual
ified to decide which those are. but
would leave that to the Wildlife
Resources Commission, one of the
backers of the bill.
(Clyde P. Patton, executive di
rector of the commission, has said
the open doe season would be con
ducted in this manner:
("At the present time, there
would be only a few isolated places
In the state where it would be
necessary to thin out surplus does
and balance the sex ratio. In no
case would there be a general open
season on does running concur
rently with the buck season.
("I believe that one or two days,
or even less in some cases, at the
end of the regular buck season,
would be sufficient time for bring
ing any of our deer herds into
proper balance.") '
Representative Houk said he ex
pects to be in Franklin practically
every week end during the session.
He flies to Greenville. S. C.. and
drives from there. He returns to
Raleigh, via Greenville, on Mon
day afternoon and is on hand for
the first session of the legislative
week, on Monday night.
