It's just that: rumor. ? SPEAKING OF Raleigh, I no tice that the Governor's weighty program hasn't ruled out the leg islators taking time for some absurd proposals. Absurd Is the word I have for the idea of Rep. Davis P. Dellinger, of Gaston County, who would give a one million dollar reward to the per son or business that first finds oil under North Carolina in commer cial quantities, i.e., at least 250 barrels of oil per day. Just like that rotten natural gas bill vetoed by Ike last year, this bill's parenthood can be trac ed back to the Texas oil Interests. One of the things he re called was how they drove turkeys ; to market when he was a boy. He would go on the wagon with his father from Upp^r Cartooge chaye. The trip to Turnersville. Ga , was 40 miles and consumed several days. Mr. Roane said there was nothing ever like a w hite horse for taking turkeys to market. "Turkeys will follow a white horse. If a man didn't own one, he'd rent one. I don't know why. but they like a white horse." The interesting stories told by Mr. Roane can be matched by all of the citizens of the county who remember the days before the ra dio. automobile, and income tax When these folks are gone, much of our county's history passes, too. Wouldn't it be a good idea if some community club got its sen ior citizens to put on paper the way of life of bygone days? Some day. historians will search vainly for much of the fact and story which is now available for the ' asking. I ? X MACON COUNTY'S Judge Pat ton got1 a mention in The Char lotte News the other day. Com menting on the inaugural cere monies at Raleigh, reporter Jul ian Scheer noted that "the capa ble Attorney-General, who once served Mecklenburg Superior Court, got a nice applause after he was sworn in". ? A READER in Clinton, N. C.. . Mrs. J. Boney, writes: "As you know, there is a special j program of Social Security for farmers who will become 65 years of age this year. They can file for 1955 and 1956, if their income was up to a certain amount, and then they are eligible for Social Security benefits. "In Pitt County the county com missioners have hired a man to go out in the byways and hedges and find these people and help ! them to get their records filed. They feel that the benefits that, can be paid in Pitt to farmers who become 65 this year will amount to a million dollars. "In Macon it might be less than a quarter of a million dollars, but that is worth getting, isn't It?" NOTE: Based on population, Pitt is about four times the size of Macon. It figures that if Pitt farmers are eligible for about a million dollars, then Macon's share would be one fourth, or $250,000. THREE FUNERALS which OC curred in Franklin within the last year have gone unreported as obituaries. Free enterprise died when all the restaurants ganged up to raise coffee pfices. Next, the barbers joined and upped hair cut charges. Last week, individual initiative was again hanged by the neck until dead. This time, the beau ticians announced a joint raise. If you told these business people there are "trusts" in Franklin they'd laugh at you. Yet, isn't the practical effect of these actions the same thing? ? Government, through : a poster put up in the franklin post office last week, is warning citizens against the so-called Hox sey cancer treatment. ? The cure has been found "worth less by two Federal courts," the poster says. Under the heading "Public Be ware!" the poster says the cure costs $400 plus $60 additional fees. "It yields ndthing of value in the cure of cancer." says the Food and Drug Administration, which prepared the poster. "It consists essentially of simple drugs which are worthless for treating cancer. ... The only cure for cancer is by surgery or radiation. . . . Death is inevitable when cancer patients fail to obtain proper medical treatment because of the lure of a painless cure 'without the use of surgery. X-rav, or radiation' as claimed by Hox sey. . . . "Not a single verified cure of internal cancer by this treatment has been found." Acoording to a United 'Press story from Washington, the poster Is the first of its kind ever issued by the Food and Drug Administra tion.
