HARLEY STEWART The annual Christmas party of the Patton Home Demonstration Club was held Dec. 18 at the com munity building with Mrs. Harley Stewart as hostess. Mrs. John D. Wells led the group in a short worship service, which gave the meaning of the differ ent symbols used at Christmas. At the conclusion of the service, a trio composed of June Wells Martha Blaine, and Linda Led ford sang "Silent Night". 'As a token of appreciation for the faithfulness of the girls in sing ing at church and at community gathering, Mrs. Wells, president, presented each with a corsage. Emphasis this month was plac ed on "Family Life" and Mrs. Ted Blaine, the club Family Life lead er, gave a talk on "Christmas Tradition Strengthens Family Ties." Quoting from Henry Van Dyke's "Spirit of Christmas", she told of the various ways of keep ing Christmas, saying it can be a "hollow-day" instead of a "hallow day" if proper emphasis is not placed on the true meaning of the day. rather than on the festive holiday. Mrs. Anna Ledford led the mem bers in playing a number of games. A sale of articles made by club members was held with the pro ceeds going to provide baskets for shut-ins in the community. After the meeting adjourned. Martha Blaine and Linda Ledford. with June Wells at the piano, led in singing of Christmas carols. AT CHAPEL PROGRAM ? Beta Club At High School Inducts 15 New Members Last Thursday morning during | the weekly chapel program at Franklin High, Beta Club Presi dent Gary McKelvey presented certificates and swore in 15 new members of the National Beta Club. The Rev. Donn Langfitt open ed the program with a short talk on education. Former members of the club told an audience of about 600 stu dents what the Beta Club insig nia represents. The lights wefe then turned out in the gymna sium and Gary lit a large golden candle and from it each of the candles held by the new and old members. This was to represent life. District Principle Harry C. Cor bin gave a short talk on the qual ifications (or a student to become a member in the National Beta Club. Superintendent H. Bueck and Principle C. K. Olson also gave short talks to the student body. The 15 new members are Fran ces Alexander, Shirley Cabe, Kate Buchanan, Joann Gibson, Dwain Horsley. Linda Whelan, Jackie Clark, Claudette L^atherman, Anita Woody, Tommy McNish, Katrina Elmore, Judy Wurst, Ann Sutton, Nancy Siler, and Rebecca Reeves. Mrs. Mildred Martin is the club advisor. News About People Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Hall left last week end to spend Christmas with his daughter, Mrs. M. B. Mc Elroy, and Mr. McElroy in Gran ite City, 111. Miss Martha Ann Stockton ar rived home from Atlanta, Ga? last week to spend Christmas with her parents, Sir. and "Mrs. J. H. Stock ton. She spent last week end vis iting friends in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Hansel Bennett and fam ily left last Friday to join Mr. Bennett in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where they will make their home. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Slagle vis ited Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Choate and Miss Louise Alexander in Charlotte last week. Mrs. W. B? McGuire and Mrs. Margaret Cooper and son, John, left last week end to visit Mr. and Mrs. William McGuire in Charlotte.
