If the leaves en your shade trees are turning brown, could be that they've been attacked by anthracnose. John H. Gilliam, forestry spe cialist for the N. C. Agricultural Extension Service, says that Many Tar Heel tree owners, especially those with sycamore trees, are concerned, about this condition, which causes early defoliation and poor appear ance of the tree. Mr. Gilliam says that in the east, American sycamore may be defoliated for several years in succession with twigs killed back by the latter part of June. Although a second crop of leaves is produced and few of the trees die, this premature leaf fall greatly lessens the val ue of sycamore for shade and ornamental purposes. A very wet season such as North Carolina has just expe rienced increases the danger of anthracnose to sycamores. Mr. GilUam says the disease can be controlled on shade trees by destroying the fallen leaves, pruning off and destroy ing all infected twigs and branches and spraying several times. Usually three applica tions with Bordeaux mixture are sufficient. The first spraying should be made when the buds begin to open, the second when the leaves are fully grown, and the third about two weeks later. No practical method of con trolling the disease in forests has been devised, Mr. Gilliam concludes. HOIKS OF DEATH RALEIGH ?
