Dear Tourist: Want Rubies, Rest, Recreation? Macon County Attractions Are Tops In Western Area DEAR TOURISTS: Welctyne to Macon County, a bustling mountain resort area which wears a necklace of Nanta hala National Forest and promises even the most discriminating visitor an unforgettable vacation of "Rubies. Rest, and Recreation". Want the confidential lowdown on Macon County ? what to see, where to go. and what to do? Then read on and learn what this small Western North Carolina county has to offer so you can make the most of your vacation, be It digging for rubles In famous Cowee Valley, taking a leisurely trip to nearby Cherokee Indian Reservation, or absorbing some of the most unusual scenery in Eastern America. Rubies Maybe? How about ruby digging, on a finders-keepers basis? Sounds like a lot of fun. doesn't it? Well, you won't have to go to India to sat isfy this yen. Franklin, county seat of Macon County, is a scant six miles from the famed Cowee Ruby Mines, where anyone with a penchant for digging can come up with a ruby, maybe just a chip and then again, maybe one worth several thousand dollars. At any rate, its terrific fun for young and old. The mines, four are now operating for the public, furnish the digging tools and sluice boxes for washing the gravel layer that contains not only rubies, but a wide variety of other gems and minerals. Daily charges range' from $1 to $3. depending upon which mine you visit. All offer assistance in identifying any stones you find and if you're the easy-going type, Another Big Ruby Is Found you can even hire some young boys to dig for you. leaving you free to wash out the gravel your self. Breathtaking It Is! In a nutshell, breathtaking scenery and delightfully cooling recreation areas come to Macon County through the compliments of the Nantahala National Forest. About 44 per cent of the forests 414,123 aeres lie within Macon, turning the area into a "must" for touring camera bugs and folks who enjoy viewing the products of Dame Nature's gifted hand. A top drawer attraction in any one's language is Dry Falls, a 60-foot cascade which annually draws an estimated 100,000 vis itors. It derives its name "dry" from the fact that visitors may walk a scenic trail behind the cas cade without getting wet. This "must" is 16 miles southeast of Franklin and four miles west of Highlands on US 64. Sightseers will find ample parking space and a concession stand for "wetting the whistle". More Water Falls Two more water attractions on US 64 between Franklin and Highlands invariably make tour ists apply the brakes and pull to the side of the highway for a better look. Cullasaja Falls (Cullasaja is an Indian word meaning "pouring sugar"), with a backdrop of al most perpendicular cliffs, is visi ble from the highway and pro vides a perfect picture from any one of several "pull off" areas along the highway. Bridal Veil Falls ? nature's an swer to the automatic car washer ? pitches a fall of water over the highway into a deep valley below. The winding highway affords camera enthusiasts many differ ent angle shots. Attraction Itself US 64 between Franklin and Highlands is an attraction in it self. A large portion of the high way is carved out of the sheer cliffs fringing picturesque Culla saja gorge. Unexcelled Views For unexcelled views of sur rounding mountain ranges tad birdseye glimpses into several other states < Georgia, South Caro lina, and Tennessee) Wayah Bald, Satulah Mountain, and Whiteside Mountain are at the top of the list. A stone observatory atop mile high Wayah Bald (famous for its colorful stand of flame azalea and mountain laurel in June) gives one a commanding view of the Appalachians and four ad joining states. The Byrne tower Is in memory of John B. Byrne, a veteran of World War I and a former forest supervisor. Way ah Bald Is 19 miles west of Franklin off Nantahala Road. Satulah Mountain, a mile and a half by trail from the heart of Highlands, has an elevation of 4.560 feet and hikers may enjoy a view of three states from Its crest. Follow The Signs Whiteside, a spectacular moun tain boasting the highest cliffs In Eastern America, now has a toll road leading to its top. The moun tain, believed to be one of the oldest in the world. Is described as a botanist's "heaven". It is near Highlands ? just follow the signs! Want Golfing? If its golfing you're after, the 18-holer at the Highlands Country Club is one of the finest in the country and plenty of caddies are always on tap. It Is just outside Highlands on NC 106. Franklin has a neat nine-holer with grass greens. An integral part of the Franklin Lodge and Golf Course, it also sports a modern swimming pool and has facilities for a variety of games. Just the place to park the family while you smooth out your game. Out-Of-The-Way For you tourists wanting cool out-of-the-way places to spread picnic lunches, here's what the county has to offer. Cliffside Lake: 17 miles from Franklin and six miles from High lands on US 64: An eight-acre lake and a number of picnic areas and shelters. Three miles of horse trails. Bathhouse, dressing rooms, showers, checking facilities. Van Hook Glade: Located in the Cullasaja Gorge, 16 miles from Franklin on US 64. Picnic areas and trailer and tent camp sites in a white pine grove. Ideal spot to camp and "beat the heat". Arrowood Glade: The gathering place for young and old. Large 200 by 400 natural swimming pool, bathhouse, dressing rooms, and toilet facilities. Plenty of picnic areas, shelters, fireplaces, water, and sanitary facilities. Site of the forest's trout rearing pools. Seven miles west of Franklin on US 64. turn right at Wayah Road. Wayah Crest: 14 miles from Franklin on US 64, turn right at Wayah Road. On Appalachian Trail, three tables, fireplaces, lean-to shelters, water, and sani tary facilities. Deep Gap: Seven miles from Franklin west on US 64, near \v -fc Rainbow Springs on the Appa lachian Trail. Lean-to shelters, facilities for camping and pic nicking. Trail leading to the top of Standing Indian Mountain. White Oak Bottoms: A favorite camping and picnicking spot lo cated 14 miles west of Franklin on US 64. One of those quiet and peaceful places, conducive to rest and relaxation. Hey Fishermen! Hey fishermen! Macon County is brimming with trout streams, which in turn are brimming with trout. Permits may be obtained at numerous checking stations on the national forest during open dates. Those of you who like your fishing from a boat will find a delightful prospect in beautiful Nantahala Lake, some 30 miles west of Franklin on US 64, turn right on Wayah Road. Paved highway all the way on one of the county's truly scenic routes. ? Serious Side? Those of you seeking a more serious side will find the Coweta Hydrologic Laboratory, the only one of its kind in Eastern United States, not only interesting, but educational. The sprawling out door water research laboratory is 12 miles south of Franklin on US 23-441, turn right at Coweta sign Did You Know? Did you know that Franklin is only 35 miles from the famous Cherokee drama "Unto These Hills." and that tickets may be purchased (reserved, too i any night through the Franklin Cham ber of Commerce? Did you know that North Caro lina's largest remaining Indian Mound is in Franklin and that a legal maneuver by interested citi zens several years aso protects it from exploitation? Did you know the whole area is rich in history? DeSoto. the famed Spanish explorer, passed through the area in the 1500 s in search of men who wore gold hats. In fact. Indian lore is as much a part of this wonderful section of Western North Carolina as the mountains themselves. Nantahala is Indian for "Land of the Noon day sun". Did you know a new city park is now under development in Franklin? Concrete shuffleboard and tennis courts already have been poured and picnic tables and fireplaces add to its enjoyment. Here are' some facts: Macon County was formed in 1828 from Haywood and was named in honor of Nathaniel Ma con, statesman and . soldier. In the early 1500'S, DeSoto's ; expedition passed through the i region and the Spaniards are be lieved to have moved through again in 1560 in a search for gold In the south mountain section, Macon has high topography, with fertile valleys protected on the northern and eastern borders by high mountains. Economic minerals produced in clude mica, Kaolin, and abestos. Many precious and semi precious stones may be found in the area. Merchantable species of trees are poplar, oak. chestnut, and white pine. ? Main cash crops are vegetables, corn, and livestock. Lumbering and mining are the chief industries. Franklin, the county seat, is the site of the old Cherokee settle I ment, Nikwasi. The county's other ! major town is Highlands, a resort j of the highest calibre.
