Mrs. Buchanan said the col lection of 1,500 slides will be available next fall, and the filing and projection equipment are al ready on hand. The Carnegie gifts came as the culmination of a two-year survey of the visual arts of the United States, covering 18 categories ranging from painting to archi tecture silver to furniture. A special feature is a collection of varied arts of the Indians from New Mexico to Alaska. A main purpose of the project was to pro vide suitable materials for teach ing courses not only in art. but also in those dealing with Ameri can social and cultural history. Institutions receiving Jhe sets are expected to keep detailed records of the use of the experimental sets. Mrs. Buchanan explained that the set of slides will be accom panied by a romolete catalog con taining pertinent data on each -lirie ar>d essays by an outstanding iirhority covering each of the "at gories of the study. It is expected that this gift will be of much value in the teaching program at Western Carolina. Every freshman is required to take a course in art history and appreciation. &nd will have op portunity for further study of the, slides as they advance into other courses.
