Q. wnat can I get to control
spider mites on cotton?
A. Sulfur dusts used to do a
good job but two of the most com
mon species have apparently de
veloped some immunity. Recent
tests with new chemicals have
done excellent jobs of controlling
them, however. One application
of half a pound of Trithion. or
one pound of Ethion per acre con
trolled the mites better in the
tests than three applications of
the best dusts available previous
ly. If you have spray equipment,
one application of Demetron
spray may also be effective.
Q. How can I get rid of bag
worms in my, shrubbery?
A. Where practical it is advis
able to remove and burn the co
coons. Chemical treatments are

as an infestation is noted and
again seven to 10 days later. Bag
worms feed mostly on evergreens.
They may also attack apple, elm,
maple, sycamore, oak. locust, or

RALEIGH? All told, traffic ac
cidents in the Tar Heel (State
claimed 1,063 victims during 1957,
according to a special study by
the Motor Vehicles Department.
The 1957 tally was four per cent
below comparable figures for the
preceding year. Injuries also show
ed a drop, the study revealed. In
jured in highway mishaps were
19,602 persons, a two per cent de
crease from 1956. Reported during
the year was a total of 47,705 ve
hicle mishaps.
