TRAVELING SALESMAN! YES, our familiar symbol bearing Southern's industrial slogan Look Ahead? Look South! has certainly "been around" since it was created in 1943. Every year since then it has appeared consistently in our advertisements in national magazines and financial newspapers reaching millions and millions of readers annually. Why do we keep on saying Look Ahead? Look South! so many times to so many people? For the same reason that we maintain an Industrial Development Department that constantly and aggressively seeks new industries for every available plant location along our lines. It's good for the Southern ? and good for the South ? to promote and "sell" the industrial expansion of the Southland in every way possible. Here is proof. In the six-year period, 1952 to 1958, there have been 2,086 major industrial developments along the Southern alone. They represent an investment of almost $3H billion and have created more than 119,000 new job opportunities for workers here. Keeping our "traveling salesman" busy selling the South helps keep the Southland busy, too! PtwidfM SOUTHERN RAILWAY SYSTEM WASHINGTON. O. C. Newt About PEOPLE Mr. and Mrs W. S. I ~ Garden Time . . . By M. E. Gardner I At this, time of the year we ] usually have a lot of complaints that tomatoes are rotting on the lower side or blossom end of the I fruit. This condition occurs on small green fruit as well as on ? fruit almost ripe. This is not an organic disease J but rather a physological con dition known as blossom-end rot. - It appears to be caused, or at least aggravated, by extremes in weather conditions ? either by periods of dry weather or periods of excessive rainfall. In periods of dry weather it can be held in ; check by providing irrigation; how ever, don't wait until you have lost a large percentage of your toma toes. Irrigate as soon as lack of sufficient moisture is evident. Mulching plants with a deep layer of straw will prevent loss of moisture from the soil and will cut down on the amount of blos som-end rot. There is now some evidence, that calcium may play a part in controlling this condition. In the mountain areas it will be necessary to control late blight if you wish to be successful with tomatoes. This is the same disease that attacks Irish potatoes. Use a copper spray such as tribasic copper sulphate or Copper A com pound and keep the plants well covered. ? ? ? Don't forget to prepare for a good fall garden. About the middle of July sow seed of broccoli, cauli | flower, collard and cabbage. These may be grown in flats or boxes | for transplanting to pots or tin cans for later transplanting to the field. Broccoli and cauliflower require more boron than is found in most of our soils. A boron de ficiency causes hollow stems and an internal browning. To prevent this, mix two level tablespoons of common borax with the fertili zer for each 100 feet of row. Three good fall garden crops are Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi and leaf lettuce. These crops are not found commonly enough in our FOB ATHLETE'S FOOT USE T-4-L BECAUSE?
