(Staff Photo) tlon is to offer assistance to workers seeking employment and to employers seeking work ers. When a person reports to our office seeking work, our trained staff makes every effort to place him on a Job that most nearly suits his qualifications and Interests. Likewise, when an employer contacts the office for workers, we try to send him an applicant that Is best suited to that Job. Finding Jobs for applicants and finding appli cants for Jobs is in no means confined to this area. When a worker cannot be found In this area we have what Is called a clearance system whereby work ers who have applied to offices in other parts of the country may be considered for the Job. In the same manner, when there Is no job available for the applicant locally, his record may be distributed to other of fices which might have a Job that would suit his qualifica tions. When Jobs are scarce, the placement of workers in suit able Jobs becomes more dlffi cult. When suitable jobs are not available the Unemployment In surance phase of out program ; is put Into operation for the I insured worker. Benefits are paid to unemployed persons on a weekly basis until they can find work on their own or be placed by the Employment Service. State College Answers Timely Farm Questions Q. Is there any advantage to plowing up tobacco stubbles as soon as harvest is complete? A. Yes. Furney A. Todd, exten sion plant pathologist at N. C. State College, reports that the nematode population can be re duced as much as 50 to 70 per cent by exposing old tobacco roots to the drying effect of the sun and wind. While this reduction | Is not enough to give practical control of nematodes, when It Is coupled with crop rotation and soil fumigation. It gives the best coifirol known. However. Todd cautions that the stubbles must be completely exposed to the sun and wind, if the pratice Is to be effective. Q. How are this fall's prices for feeder calves and yearling steers expected to compare with those of a year ago? A. The prices are expected to be generally higher. The rise in beef price* experienced last fall and winter has held firm through out the -year and shows no Im mediate indications of dropping back to previous levels. However, this does not mean that there will not be any profit in feeding cattle this year. Cattle profits de pend to a large degree on feed prices. And this year's bumper feed crop is expected to favor the marketing of feed through cattle. At left to an example of the modern corn storage facilities going up on North Carolina farms as farmers realise the increasing importance of keeping their grain at harvest time. The steel bins are weather an4 rat proof, while the old corn crib at the right serves as .an invitation to both weather and rodent damage. Specialists at N. C. State College estimate that a million bushels of new storage facilities have been added to North Carolina farms in re cent weeks, as Tar Heel farmers prepare to har vest a near-record 78 million bushels of com this fall.
