A Helpful Hint North Carolina produces ap proximately 120 million bushels ?of grain annually. Twenty per cent of North Caro tin's annual grain production is sold out-of-state at harvest time for relatively low prices because of lack of adequate storage. Grain storage facilties in North Carolina increased from 7.5 to 17.8 million bushels from 1950 to 1958. North Carolina now has about 27.8 million bushels of acceptable grain storage. North Carolina's 120 million bushel grain crop is worth ap proximately $160 million. Insects and rodents take $10 million annual toll of improperly stored grain in North Carolina. Stored grain losses from rotting and molding in North Carolina total $200,000 annually. A recent study shows that Eastern North Carolina alone can support 3.5 million bushels of ad ditional xrain storage. SCGARFORR SINGING A singing will be held Sat urday night at 7:30 at the Sugarfork Baptist Church. The president, Andrew Gregory, in vited all singers and the pub-, lie to attend. Farmers Close To National Average In Health Money How do North Carolina (aimers stack up against those of other sections of th? United States In money spent for health care? Recent reports show that In 1955 farm families In the South Atlantic states, which include North Carolina, spent about $239 for health care. This was very close to the national averase of $240 The manner In which the money was spent did vary from the national average, however, says Donald G. Hay. professor of rural sociology at N. C. State College. The average farm family in the South Atlantic states spent $58 for doctors' care. $47 for drugs and vitamins, $40 for hospital care. $37 for health insurance premiums, and $18 for dental care. When these figures are com pared to national expenditures. It shows that farm families in this area spend over the national average for, hospital care. drug3 and vitamins. They spend a little less for health Insurance. And they only spend two-thirds of the national average for dental care.
