News In
The Making
By BOB S. SLOAN

Last Friday the largest pape:
making machine in the world was
Installed at Champion Fibre mil]
in Canton. The installation of this
machine starts one thinking of
many things concerning this out?
standing company.
As a boy I can recall everyone
saying that soon we would be out
of wood for the Champion people
and Canton would be a ghost
town. Now some thirty years later
we find them expanding their
facilities. Undoubtedly the U.S.
Forest Service and its conserva
tion methods in Western North
Carolina are in part responsible
for the continued supply of wood.
However to Champion Fibre
Company must go the lions share
of the credit, and there are sev
eral reasons for their outstanding
continued growth.
First, Champion Fibre Company
has no unions. With (heir above
average salaries for the" area, paid
hospitalization plan for their em
ployees, and ietirement plan for
faithful workers they have staye i
iihiad of the clamor of the dis
satisfied. In addition to this
Champion has been a great sup
porter of the YMCA in Canton,
they have a fine recreatlor.al'area
i Lake Logan > for their employees,
and their oldtimers club and its
recreational facilities bring joy
and contentment to many an "old
time Champion -Man." -i
Undoubtedly this has cost
Champion Fib'/e Company, but
they have been well paid for their
investment. For one thing they
have been able to continue with
out strike interruptions a prtogram
of research, * development and
planned growth.
Had they been faced with the
problem of settling strikes agitated
' by Irresponsible outsidr leadership
eager to exploit local unrest for
their own gain they could not
have spent the time or money
in research necessary for such
a program. It has cost, but it has
paid Champion Fibre Company
well.

It is teacher hiring time again, j
We certainly hope that Macon |
? County School officials will leave
; no stone unturned to secure a '
I band director this year. If the j
; school officials in Swain. Graham. 1
Cherokee, and Jackson county |
. can find good band directors, '
shouldn't our people be able to
also? We believe the people of j
Macon County and the patrons j
of the Franklin High School want j
a band.
I have heard a rumor that Guy ,
Sutton will be the Principal at '
Highlands high school for this ?
coming year. For the record I i
would like to say that, if this is '?
true, Highlands high may make j
rapid strides in the next few ,
years. If Mr. Sutton holds his j
temper and curbs his desire to
take over the county school [
system he can do one of the best
jobs of any man in this part of |
the state, I think.
The annual cost of poultry
liiseases in North Carolina has
been conservatively estimated to
be $12 million, or 10 per cent of
the gross cash receipts.
