Brady's BLARNEY By A Brmdj Called J. F. Call this the dilemma of the Smoky Mountain Cloggers, if you will, for their situation certainly fails into this category. The young dancers, who brought fame to Macon County two years ago when appearing on the Ed Sulliran show, have a once-ln-a lifetime chance to go to Holly wood, aad from there possibly on to greater things. Only one thing stands in their way. Money. It'll take about $350 per child to put them on the West Coast and in the office of several movie studios and TV agents who are interested in their talent. This is not idle chit-chat. It's fact. The young talent scout. Bob Cox. who put the Cloggers on the Sullivan show, has letters from several of his West Coast contacts, indicating an Interest in the dance team for maybe a movie or one shot appearances on TV shows like Wagon Train. Have Oun-Will Travel, and Cimarron City. The problem is getting the Cloggers to the coast just as soon as school is out. Not one to mince words, and yet one who has shown he knows what he's talking about and can come up with the answers. Mr. Cox says he's convinced he could "sell" the Cloggers to Hollywood if he could got them there. Personally, I believe him, be cause I have as much faith in the young dancers as he has. In ad dition, I've got a lot of faith in Bob Cox's ability. But, there's that Big IF staring us in the face; IF we could raise the $350 per Clogger to get them * House Wiring * Electric Heat Installations * Electrical Repairs * Free Estimates. 1 ? James P. Both are members of the chapter and plan to go into teaching careers. to the coast, the publicity that Macon County would get from their adventure would be fabulous. IP only we could raise the money? that's the dilemma of the Smoky Mountain doggers. ? jpb ? Without exception, Franklin's "retired" operators thought I was taking a pot-shot at them in my recent column. In whidh I hailed (yea verily, rejoiced) the coming of the dial system. Furthermore, several said that I, by Innuendo, left the impression that they had not been doing a good job. Down girls! I meant nothing of the sort. I've always thought the Franklin operators were the most efficient I've en countered ? and I've said so many times. Moreover, I used to enjoy those little personal conversations I held with you girls. The dial system isn't very good at this; about all I get is the busy signal! In other words, we miss you, dear operators, all 19 of you ? even if you did call me all night when the dial system came in! And I really missed you one day last week when I got a busy signal for three solid hours trying to place a long distance call. Finally, when my dial finger was on the point of bleeding tender ness, a voice came through. My first question was "Why don't you put on more operators over there. I've been twirling this in strument for three hours." And a sweet, patient voice answered back; "We need more circuits, sir, not more operators." Such is progress. ?jpb ? Was over at the high school one day last week to take a picture of Don Ledford and Jackie Ann Cabe, winners of the Mrs. Hattie Waldroop scholarships. Always a quick one with a quip, Jackie Ann stepped up and sug gested. "Don't take a good picture. When this geometry test I'm tak ing now is graded I won't even be in the running for this thing." ? Jpb ? For a high school of its size. Franklin High certainly turns out some exceptionally good products. Many of them go on to college and more often than not are out standing college students. Take, for example. Tommy Gnuse and Norman Smith. Tom my. a Duke student, has just been awarded an R.O.T.C. award in engineering ? an award made on a national level, not a local one. Norman has distinguished him self on the campus at U.N.C. in a variety of ways,! from running for student body president to making Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, a feat that warrants a couple of cheers from the gallery. I personally know both; that's why I single them out. But. the fact remains that Macon County students aire always making names for themselves in all fields, which proves to me that the teachers are doing an excellent job of . prepar ing those going on to college. i 'Big Betsy' Back Again Franklin's well. Big Betsy", is back at work again after a major overhaul. She's putting out between 80 and 90 gallons per minute, a capacity that lets her keep her title as the town's top produc ing well. Plagued by "red water", the well was shut down several weeks ago and the Virginia Supply and Well Company recased the shaft, the shaft. The well was cut back into the town system Tuesday morning of last week. Prelo J. Dryman, chairman of the water committee, reports the well appears to be giving pure water once again.
