No. 1
line has been losing money for
many years. It has been in re
ceivership since 1 1923, and the
volume of freight has steadily
declined. Local businessmen blame
this decline, however, not on their
lack of interest, but on poor serv
ice.
The receiver. H. L. Brewer, of
Cornelia, submits operating rev
venues and expenses as proof that
the line is in deep financial
trouble, at least over the portion
in North Carolina.
With revenues, expenses, and
hire for freight cars prorated on
a mileage basis, the receiver shows
that 1957 was the last year even
the Georgia portion made money.
In 1956, the total net operating
result in Georgia was a credit of
$7,578, while North Carolina had
a deficit of $43,001. In '57, Georgia
suddenly found its expenses ex
ceeding revenues $208,869 to $181.
031, for a total deficit of $46,220:
North Carolina's deficit dropped
! this year/ to $36,410.
j Last year, 1958, Georgia op
erated at a loss of $29,839. and
North Carolina at a figure of
$34,803.
