CITIZENS OF FRANKLIN
TAKE CARE ? BEWARE
Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by your fine
step backward in defeating the Water Bond Issue. There are still
many danger's ahead that must be avoided if progress is to re
main defeated.
Watch out for those misguided advocates of a new, modern,
fireproof courthouse. Think what a horrible contrast it would
create for your shabby business area.
Then, too, there are those who will try to talk you into im
- proving and extending your sewer system. Such improvements
are certain to damage the septic tank and out-house businesses.
By all means, block the entry of Duke Power into Macon
County. Duke is unquestionably one of the most progressive
utilities in the United States. It is sure to leave nothing undone
to make Macon County attractive to Industry, Investors and
Tourists. Ask any business man, banker or Chamber of Com
merce in the area Duke serves and they will confirm that this
Company is dedicated to progress. Ain't that awful?
Just you let Duke get a toehold in your community and the
area will grow and prosper beyond your control. Then the build
ers and developers will come in and go to work. Do you know
that construction noises have been known to keep chickens from
laying and reduce a cow's milk. Your children may be able to
stay here instead of being compelled to go elsewhere to work
and those now working some place else may decide to return.
Duke must be stopped if Franklin is to retain its place on the
census list of towns that dare not to grow.
Be sure to ward off any and all attempts to extend your
C ity Limits. A one mile radius makes a nice well contained small
town. To stay small you must think small and act small.
Your newspaper has done only a fair job in thwarting prog
ress. Urge it to take a tougher stand against anything and every
thing better. Remember,' business men, investors and tourists
usually judge a community by its newspaper and yours is not
nearly bad enough to discourage them completely. At least, not
as long as your land prices arc so attractive ? even lower than
most distressed areas.
There are, of course, many more ways to retard your com
munity's development which space does not permit listing. How
ever, I will be glad to supply such 'information upon request.
