Macon Sports Roundup By TODD KEECE Franklin High's Panthers open their football season against Clay ton, Oft., a week from tomorrow (Friday) night. With 60 boys out for the varsity and junior varsity ?quads, this year's team is point ing for a very successful season. But. many football fans hav? heard the statement that a team is only as good as the people who are behind It. The Panthers need the backing of the people of Pranklln and Macon County and need financial support for a pro ject which would ? give the boys an advantage for a more success ful season: that Is, a means to film the games (on movie film) so team members and coaches may study these films the follow ing week and get a far greater insight into the workings Of the team than can be discovered in the "heat of battle" while the Stone Eternal ? fitting tribute to your departed loved ones. Successful college and high school teams all over the country employ this method as one of the best means of training football players. When a player can actu ally see himself on the field and study his own actions and see which plays are successful and which ones are not. and why, he can correct those mistakes In next week's practice and games and make a much better competitor of himself, learn to protect him self better, and offer more as a team player. Both the Smoky Mountain Con ference teams which won Class A and Class AA honors last year have been filming their games for several years and players, coaches, and school officials are high In praise of the advantages offered to a boy playing football through these films. Many fans also enjoy seeing films of the games and in most places, they are welcome to watch the films. At the end of the season, the best spots In all the films can be spliced together to make up a very enjoyable "Football Highlights" movie to be shown to the public at a special showing or at the annual football banquet. Repro ductions may be obtained at a relatively low cost for any players or parents desiring prints of the films. Coaches save the films from year to year and refer back to them as a means of showing their team the type of competition they can expect from a certain team and how they played last year. The question arises as to how Franklin's Panthers can get their games filmed. During the past week TUB PRESS has made in quiries to film companies and other schools as to how they work out the details. Most towns have some sort of "Boosters" club or "Quarterback" DR. DANIEL A. Sixteen milli meter movie cameras are used by most schools as this type of camera offers relative low-cost filming and gives good movies. Several people In Franklin already own 16mm cameras and might be willing to loan or rent these to a "Quarterback" club for the first year of operation. Price for 16mm cameras start at around $360 and If the club proved a success mem bers might decide to purchase their own In future years. Most games, filming only the action of plays, use up about four 100 foot rolls of 16mm film, which costs around $5 per roll. Processing this film costs around $10 for the 400 feet used In a game. Sixteen milli meter projectors are easy to come by, leaving a total cost of approxi mately $30 per game for the movies. One possibility for decreasing this cost has already come up. Gene Dowdle, owner of Dene's Studio and Camera House, has offered to process the film free of charge If a club would be will ing to buy a $50 processing kit, which could be used year after year. But, taking a top figure of around $400 to film 10 games a season, would Franklin back this? Why not? If a club could be formed with 50 members paying dues of $10 a year, the Panther's could have the movies and Frank lin would show the team that tewns-people are behind them 100 per cent . . . and then you're on the road to a conference cham pionship. THE PRESS believes that tWs club would be a good Idea and would like to hear any comment from people of Franklin on the subject, if you would like to back such a club and offer the Panthers the advantages of these movies, let us hear from you. You can contact any member of the news or sales staff, write us here, or call LA 4-2010. The season Is at hand. The Panthers need this support. Let's get to work on this project and get behind the Panthers at the same time.
