- A LETTER FROM BILL - Franklin Youth In Germany Ready To Join His Family (Editor's note: Bill Hyde, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hyde, of Franklin, is one of two Franklin students in Earope this year. He is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Panlsen in Eppstein/Taunus, Germany.) I am writing from a new youth hostel called "Jugendherberge" in Koln-Deutz, Germany. The sixty-five American Field Service students to Germany are staying here for two weeks. From the hos tel we will go to our respective families throughout Germany. We sailed out of New York har bor at midnight on August 22. Few of us got to bed before three o'clock for all wanted to catch thr last glimpse of America for six months. On the way over, much of our time was spent learning some thing of the German language and customs. We also had a little time to swim and relax on our smooth and pleasant voyage. The "8even Seas" stopped for the debarkation o f several pas sengers at Southampton, England, and we had a little time to look at the shores of the Isle of Wight and its typically English scenery. The next morning we landed in the busy port of Rotterdam, Ne therlands. It was raining the day we docked and has rained every day since. After going through customs we had the rest of the day for sightseeing in the rebuilt metro polis with the help of the Dutch American Field Service. That evening we boarded a direct train for Koln (Cologne), Germany. We had Just two minutes to shove sixty-five students and 300 pieces of luggage through the doors and windows. We barely made It! Since we have been in Cologne we've gone sight-seeing, have climbed the tower of the famous Cologne Cathedral taken an all day boat trip on the Rhine Riv er, and have been swimming in a fabulous modern indoor pool. Today we heard a - speech by Dr. Russell, from the American Embassy in Bonn, on cultural ex change programs. Next week, the whole group will visit Bonn, the capital of West Germany, so that we can become better acquainted with the German government. We are going to the opera and to a Beethoven piano concert soon. They have an enormous, new op era house here in Cologne which is said to be the largest in Ger many. But besides the fun there is also the work! Our Gel-man chaper ones are continuing our. language classes every day and are inform ing us about German life in gen eral. By September 15 we hope to be sufficiently prepared to go to our families and start school life. For now, "Auf Wiedersehen" from your American Field Serv ice student in Germany.
