Don’t fail to turn over a new leaf. Have you gotten over your Christmas? The most distressing thing about pov erty is the fact that other people are rich The devil wouldn’t be so hard to over power if he didn’t have so many people assisting him. The quickest way to win the confidence of most Vass men is to start cussing some fellow they don’t like. We can’t understand why eggs should be so high when the’ve fixed it so people can’t have egg-nogg any more. Found—A young man’s coat. Owner can have same by paying for this adver tisement, if he appears in person. It has been our sbservation that the average Vass girl never thinks much of a man until after he has made her mad. The number of penny postcards receiv ed from friends this year indicates that something lowered the American standard of giving. The stuff they drank in the old days called for ice-water the next morning; this present-day stuff calls for embalming fluid. We expect any day to hear that some ardent feminist has decided to grow a full set of whiskers just to prove her equality with ‘man. There is one more day left for a person to become a subscriber to the Pilot at $1.50 a year. Remember* after that date it will be $2.00 a year. Last year the nation spent five hundred millions for soft drinks, but just wait until it develops the habit of saying: “Now have another one on me.” The appendix is removed because it is useless. If all unused parts of the human anatomy were to be removed some folks would, have nothing left but a mouth and a gall bladder. What is more annoying than to run across a man who exposes his ignorance by saying “Is that so?” when he can get his home paper 52 times a year for less than a nickel a week. The only difference Prohibition has made in the man who was always afraid his friends might find out he kept liquor in his house is that now he’s more afraid they’ll find it out. It used to be the lazy laborer’s conten tion that he was worth all he could get, and. it’s still true. The only difference is that he isn’t worth as much as he thought he was and he isn’t getting it. If you have a friend and wish to mal him a copy of tae Pilot, and c ^me to our office we will place the paper in a wrapper and direct it all frea of charge. Our advice to all Vass citizens at the beginning of the a new yeer is not to do any disagreeable thing today that they can put off untill tomorrow. Then maybe you won’t have to do it at all. A civil service examination for Railway Mail Clerk will be held January i5, 1921. at Charlotte, Durham, Fayetteville, Gas tonia, Greensboro, Monroe, Raleigh, Rocky Mount and several other places in the state. The way freight trains and cars were slam-banged around Vass’ freight yards last Monday made one belief that an earthquake had struck the Seaboard Air Line. ' All trains were running from three to four hours late. Next Sunday being the first Sunday in January there will be religious services, both morning and evening, at the Metho dist Episcopal Church. Rev. L. H. Joyner the pastor, wants a full attendance at both services. So don’t fail to attend. When the President pardoned a man like James J. Dorsey, who made thousands of dollars out of his dirty scheme to buy up tuberculous cattle, inject them with serum and then sell them at a big profit as healthy animals, all confidence in the integrity of the present administration was lost. In Dorsey the lowest form of rascality is lodged; in his pardon the worst sort of injustice is wrought. -The Christmas entertainment at the Presbyterian Church last Friday evening was a most enjoyable event. Recitations were delivered by Josie Lynn Thompson, Mildred Gunter and Katherine McMillan. Choruses were sung by the primary classes. Santa Claus appeared at the end of the program and presented .each child with a present. A large decorated tree was a feature. Mr. Frank Alexander is superin tendent of the Sunday School. Tenant House Burned Fire destroyed a tenant house Thurs day morning about three o’clock - located on the Leslie Farm. The house was oc cupied by John Blalock, colored, and his wife came very near being burned.
