WHMriW Educational Natters August B. Cameron. All of Moore county’s schools have been supplied with teachers and though this has been a difficult task in tlie face of the great teacher shortage, we believe that in 'the main we have a stronger teaching lorce than many other counties fiavi* at tliis time. The spirit of discontent that was for a time so nuicli in evidence among teachers, as well as in other professions and callings seems to have almost dis- a})i)eared, and most of our teachers air doing faithful work. We urge upon the people in each coiiununity to use their best efforts to make the school the best that it can be. It is true that much de- j)cnds upon the teachers, hut no hiatter how strong a teacher you iiiay liave, the school will not be all .that it ought to be unless the peo ple of the community give their active support to the school. Are there any broken window lights that cause some child to sit in a draft? Is there a plentiful sup ply of good wood, or do some of the pupils have to spend most of their time gathering up fuel w'her- ever they can find it? Is the heater in good condition and sufficiently large to keep a comfortable tem perature in the room, or do the pu pils have to bundle and crowd around the heater to keep w’arm? How about the water supply? Is it plentiful and clean? Those are im portant matters and will contribute largely to the success or failure of your school. Have you visited the school and h\ trieiully discussion of matters of co.-iiuon Interest ’et the teacher un derstand that you wei-e backing her to the limit? Friday, February 28th, will be ‘North Carolina Day” in Moore coiui y. In sOiui* parts of the state the day was observed at the close 01 tl.e fail lerm, but inasnuich as it was left oi)tinal with the coun- lies, it was deeiued best to let it ro; :e in after the holidays and near to Washington’s birthday. From the 1st to 2(5th oi February is “Na tional Song Week,” and we believe that the observance of Nortli Caro lina Day will be a fitting close to the week of study and practice of the National songs. We hope that al our schools will devote some time and effort to the study and practice of our patriotic songs.. It is a splendid way to cultivate American ism in our young people to get them to learn our patriotic songs, and be come familiar with their historv and sentiment. The programs for North Carolina Day are now being sent out. We shall be g’ad for the teachers to go carof ill’’ over tlio program and arrange to have eaci' part carried out. It pr? sents a splen did opportunity for a community get-together day. Several of these numbers will be well worth discuss ing. Notify the people of the com munity in good time and ask differ ent ones to be prepared to give his or her views m answer to any one or more of the questions. Try to make the discussions general, and get as many different ones as pos-j sible to give expression to his views, j It will be well enough to get aj speaker from a distance if you can,! but as a rule, when someone from a distance comes to speak, the home | folks will have nothing to say, and ; you will accomplish more for your! school and community if you can get the people together and have a general free and hearty expression | irom them as to the main problems, j A few of the patriotic songs you ^ will practice during the w eek, in- i terspersed with the discussions, will' make a good program, and for those | schools that will agree to frame | and preserve a picture of ex-Presi | dent Roosevelt, w^e think we shaJl be able to provide a very desirable! copy. This might be made a very i attractive feature of the program. ! The Superintendent will be in Is the acme of insurance protection.
