Too Nuch Leniency
The habit of officials and courts

rapid rate in this state and, in fact,
all over the United States. Leniency
rather than punishment seems to be
the rule which tends to make oth
ers in positions of trust less careful
than they would be if they knew' a
stilt prison sentence w'ould be their
fate if they strayed from the straight

zens of Vass have b*een struck with
the number of items in daily papers
dealing with cases in which em
ployes have stolen money within the
past few months. And usually the
story of the theft is accompanied by
the announcement that the guilty
party escaped with a suspended sen
It would be interesting to know
just how far a suspended sentence
goes toward reforming a man who
has robber others; how much he re
spects it and in how many cases it
would be an effective bar against
his doing the same thing again. If
he is let off with the mere penalty
of paying back that which he un
lawfully appropriated, it is reason
able to argue that he would do the
same thing again if he had a chance,
feeling it is easy to escape. Judges
must decide what is best ,but they
should also remember that being too
lenient sets a bad example for the
other fellow. They should, of course,
give the accused the benefit of the
doubt. But they should also bear in
mind that our laws are worthless if
not enforced, and that however
much they dislike to imprison a man
there are many instances in which
the community isn’t safe with them
running at large.

weak and starving that they can hardly
stand, begging for food on streets. If you
