WHAT IS THRIFT ’Hr ! iii 4:il 'li If m 11*^' ;| -rii In the average Vass man’s mind thrift means saving money. In theo ry that is thrift, but in practice it may be the reverse. For thrift means getting the most for your money by investing it in things for which there is a present use or future profit. Put ting a padlock on the pocket is not thrift. That’s stinginess. If one can buy a lot worth $300 for $200, it is thrift to buy it. If a suit of clothes which will be needed next fall can be bought now for $20 when it will cost $30 when next fall ar rives, then it will be thrift to buy it. Thrift is taking advantage of oppor tunities in which there is profit. It means keeping your dollars everlast ingly on the job. Thrift also means refraining from useless expenditures that keep the pocketbook so thin that investments cannot be taken advan tage of when they are offered. Things should be bought from the standpoint of use and profit, and if there is no present use and no profit in sight, don’t buy. No matter what your definition of thrift may be, when it is carefully studied and analyze and boiled down, it simply means getting ready for a big opportunity, and hoping it will come. And getting ready for the big opportunity is just another definition of laying away for the rainy day. Don’t hide or dissipate your savings. Invest them. There are so many fine opportunities open right now, and right around here, that no man, who cares about the future, can afford to neglect them or close his eyes to them. We overheard a Vass boy say yes terday that it’s a good thing the sol diers were not as long getting to France as congress is in getting the bonus question ironed out. AN AGRICULTURAL ENCAMP MENT IN JULY? [From the Pig Club News] Wouldn’t it be fine to have an en campment for boys and girls some time during the summer? Well, all indications now are that we are likely to have such an outing somewhere in Moore county. There are several very desirable places in the county and a week’s stay at Lakeview, Pinehurst, Jackson Springs, Pinebluff or Eureka would mean a whole lot to a hundred or more boys and girls doing some kind of agricultural club work. A mighty nice program can be ar ranged. Each member could bring his own supplies, and tents can be secur ed through the State Department. Squads can take care of the cooking and police duties. Lectures and de monstrations would be given each morning, and recreation, games and morning; recrea tion, games and stunts could b e given afternoons and nights. All this will be nice, but before we can make defi nite plans for such outing we must first get the membership completed, and see a willingness on the part of the individuals to do good work before we could attempt such.
