JACKSON SPRINGS NEWS A large crowd from here attended the State Fair last week, and report the best ever held in Raleigh. The Fair was a great source of adver tisement to the State, especially to the sections exhibiting. This sec tion had some advertisements. It came through our schools, and it was our boys that did it. Clarence Pat terson, a Moore county boy of route 2, who is attending Ellerbe High school several miles south of here in Richmond county and who is making good in football, won second individu al honors in judging field crops, and with his team mates’ help the Eller be high school won 1st place. The Sandhill Farm Life School won 2nd place while the Troy high school in Montgomery county won 4th place. The boys had never had much ex perience with livestock, and their training was short, but Marion Lu ther, a Montgomery county club boy, who received his training at home under the direction of county agent Morrow, brought his county up to sixth place in stock judging by win ning 1st individual honors. There were schools from 42 coun ties represented at the Fair, and this speaks well for the youths from the vocational schools of Moore, Rich mond and Montgomery counties. Miss Patty Marks returned to her home at Albemarle Friday after teaching a few days in the local high school. Her health is the best It has been in several years, but the medi cal authorities in the New York Hos pital w'here she underwent an opera tion last summer, learning of her re turn to school duties, advised against it. Miss Marks will rest this winter, and every one is wishing her continu ed improvement. She was very pop ular with the faculty, students and the community, as she was a very tireless worker in the interest of the school or anything for the betterment of the community. Miss Ruth Patterson, who accepted a position with the Bank of Jackson Springs sometime ago, has assumed her duties. Miss Patterson is very popular and was assistant postmaster here for sometime, and remained in the office here for sometime after Miss Lola Thomas received her ap pointment. Mrs. McKenzie, who was postmaster here for several years prior to Miss Thomas’ appointment, was very efficient but made no effort to keep her position under a repub lican administration and along with Miss Patterson is to be commended for the excellent spirit in offering their services to Miss Thomas at any time. Miss Birdie Thomas is in the post- office now, and every one seemed to be well pleased when Miss Thomas, the postmaster, announced her cousin would be her assistant. Both young ladies receives the endorsement of the democrats. Misses Maude Poole and Janie Clark attended the marriage of the former’s sister. Miss Ella Mae Poole, to Mr. Archie Currie at the home of the bride in Raeford on Wednesday of last week. The bride is a very popu lar young lady and is well known here where she visits often. The groom is a prominent young business man of Hoke county. Herbert Currie, superintendent of R. A. Derby’s farm is confined to his bed with a light attack .of pneumonia and tonsilitis. D. L. Mc- Coll has recently had his house, on the Troy road, remodeled and a fresh coat of paint added. A. W. E. Capel, of Troy, is having his summer home here remodeled. Our village grows slow, but with the back country that is rich in agriculture and the future development of some more water power in this section the growth of our village is looked forward to. Mrs. Chas. Meacham who has been very sick is slightly imnroving. November 3rd, on Friday before the great Sandhill Fair at Pinehurst, our Community Fair will be held at the high school auditorium. People are taking a great interest in the Fair this year, and we are looking forward to much improvement over last year. To better the one held at West End on last Friday means hard work. Her many friends in Moore county will learn with interest that Miss Bertha Proffit, former home demon stration agent of this county but now with Mecklenburg county, had a nice display of jellies and pickles on ex hibit at the State Fair, and won 1st prize. We want to see Moore county win some of those prizes next year. Rev. J. A. Calligan, of McColl, S. C., who conducted meetings at Pine hurst and Culdee during the summer, will begin a revival here on Sunday night, November 12th. N. B. Jones, Jr., of Fayetteville, spent Sunday with his parents here. Since the strike took effect on the Norfolk-Southern railroad we have been receiving very poor service. People have been patient. We can now get a daily paper, but the train is usually late getting here. People along the Norfolk Southern railroad through this section are entitled to better passenger, mail and express service and should demand it of the railroad authorities. On next Tuesday night there will be a mock wedding given at the graded school auditorium. There will be other attractions and everyone is assured of an evening of pleasure. The proceeds will go to the communi ty club to help defray the expensees of the Community Fair. A large crowd was out at the graded school auditorium on Thursday night for the community moving pictures. The pictures are always welcomed here.
