ATHLETICS AT PINEHURST
SCHOOL
The basket ball season was opened
here last Friday with a very fast
game between the high school teams
of Carthage and Pinehurst. A large
crowd was present to see the Pine
hurst boys down the team from Car
thage by a score of fourteen to
twelve. The fact that the Pinehurst
team is a new one, never having play
ed together until last Friday, speaks
well for the coaching of Mr. B. B.
Littlejohn, who has been engaged as
assistant to Prof. Cason and who will
be the athletic director of the school.
Altho outweighed in practically
every position, the Pinehurst quint
held their own at every stage of the
game. A very amusing feature of
the game was the manner in which
the McCaskill twins baffled their op
ponents. So closely resembling each
other that often times their own play
mates mistake Frank for Hubert, and
visa versa, their opponents were un
able to keep track of them and sev
eral times during the game two Car
thage players were devoting their
attention to one of the twins, leav
ing the other one free to wreck their
chances of winning. Prof. Cason
states that considerable attention is
to be devoted to athletics in the Pine
hurst school from now on. He was
highly elated with the splendid spirit
and gameness exhibited by his boys
last Friday.
The Pinehurst team is made up of
Horace Kelly, Melvin McCaskill,
Leighton Fry, and the McCaskill
twins, Frank and Hubert. High
school teams desiring games with this
team will please direct their inquiries
to Prof. J. F. Cason or Mr. B. B.
Littlejohn.
WHY PUT IT OFF
There can’t be much more pretty
weather of the summer brand in store
for us. Inclement days are just
around the corner, and will be on
us before we know it. Then what ex
cuse has any citizen for putting off
for another day the repair of side
walks, fence or house ? He has prom
ised himself all summer he would
look after it before fall arrived. But
in most cases it hasn’t been done.
For your own comfort you should see
that the house is in repair, and for
the comfort and safety of your neigh
bors it is your duty to see that the
sidewalks in front of your premises
is as good as it is possible to make
it. Stumbling along over rough,
wornout sidewalks doesn’t sweeten
the disposition of anyone to the point
where they compliment you for not
making repairs. On the other hand
we sometimes think that if the man
who permits his walk to go unrepair
ed could hear some of the remarks
of those forced to walk over it he
would get busy and fix it without a
moment’s delay. But regardless of
what may be said, you should have
pride enough, as a good citizen of a
good town, to make improvements in
front of your place before bad weath
er sets in. And that isn’t a long way
off.
