Friday, June 10, 1927. reiffi FiLoi Pacre Seven Society of Automotive Engineers Demonstrates Advantages of Parts Eight members of the Washington section, Society of Automotive En gineers, demonstrated the advant ages of standard automotive parts recently by assembling a half-ton Chevrolet chassis in the record time of six and one-half minutes, in com petition with six other teams simi larly engaged. The stunt was a fea ture of the Society’s annual summer meeting at French Lick, Ind. While the assembled delegates de rived much amusement from watch ing the seven teams vie for a record in a line of work with which they were unfamiliar, except in theory, the performance also carried its les son to many of the watchers. But for the perfectly-fitting p(arts, the assembly might have req^uired hours instead of minutes. The elapsed time was strikingly short, in view of the fact that none of the assemb lers were connected with Chevrolet nor familiar with its mechanical de tails. Three of the winning team were engineers of the United States Bureau of Standards. The slowest team required only a few minutes longer than the fastest, and its hurry added amusement to the contest. As a test of each man’s work, each car had to be run five times around a loop in the nearby driveway before the results were cer tified. The seven trucks were shipped to French Lick from the Chevrolet fac tory at Flint, Mich. Such parts as the distributor assembly, the wiring system, gasoline tank, carburetor, a front and rear wheel, and various other units, together with a miscel lany of bolts, nuts and screws, were then removed and tossed into boxes in the pits adjacent to the assembly space. Equipped only with two sets of tools such as are furnished with each Chevrolet truck, each team had then to select the parts and put them in their proper place. “The quick assembly job performed at French Lick offers a hint as to the reason for the Chevrolet truck’s pop ularity,” said Mr. Keith, local dealer of Chevrolets. “Trucks are business vehicles, and the owner loses when ever they are laid up for repairs. The seven teams at the S. A. E. meet ing demonstrated that the owner himself can make the needed replace ments, in most (mses, with no eqtiip- ment except that furnished with his truck, and thus keep his Chevrolet making money for him with a mini mum of interruption and expense.” Death of Miss Priest. Miss Janie Ann Priest, who for many years lived in the McCrimmon Chapel community, died last Tuesday and was buried in the Lkaeview cem etery on Wednesday afternoon. Her life was one of solicitude and service —one of service to any of mankind that needed aid. She was a sister to the late Mrs. Angus McNeill who lived a few miles from Lakeview un til the time of her death a year ago.
