We have often run up against an immovable body—we once tried to get into a World’s Series ball game without a ticket, for instance—and we know ex actly what happens in such instances. But we have never really considered i ourself an irresistible force. j To us, therefore, it was an inter-1 I esting experiment which a certain j colored employe of the Town of South- j I ern Pines tried out last Monday. He ' was piloting the village tractor, a 1 vehicle of considerable girth and ‘ ! avordupois when kept in its own I class, and he was headed for the Sea- I board tracks when the two were last I seen together. Now it is a simple j matter in arithmetic, algebra, calculus or what have you to figure out that ! a tractor is not in the same class as a Seaboard train. They really aren’t any match at all. A Seaboard train • never could make the weight to fight i ir the same classification. Only One Blow Struck. But obviously to those who wit- nei!i3ed the encounter, the driver of Southern Pines’ late lamented tractor did not appreciate the disparity. The train kept on, and he kept on. The train was not, you will argue, an im movable body. True, horizontally; but oh, laterally! And our tractor chauffeur certainly must have consid ered himself an irresistible force, or he would never have tackled the mon- st<fr. Briefly, they met. Very brief ly. The referee, had there been one, never could have counted ten. The tractor was just OUT on the first blow. Seaboard landed one punch and! , Tractor went spinning. Dr. Mudgett was called but he could do nothing. For funeral services, see morning pa pers. Please omit flowers. Oh yes, the driver escaped un harmed. But we understand the Seaboard suf fered one fractured cowcatcher. itsiitttttttittttttttmmxmtttnttt:' Read The Pilot. Advertise in The Pilot. Tell your friends about The Pilot.
